Exactly. Meb has the better marathon PR, won both New York and Boston, and has the better Olympic marathon medal to date. Doesn't feel like he's been upstaged or has anything to be jealous about.

You are implying that these situations are the same as each other and the same as the NOP situation. They are not, thus it is not hypocritical. Pretty simple.

Meb isn't an idiot and can see the writing on the wall. Rupp will finish with a better PR and more wins than Meb - that is certain. Classic case of young buck taking down the old bull.

I mean... Meb only got Silver because a spectator tackled the leader... Therefore, if Rupp wins Boston in 2:08:36 or faster, he's already tied the accolades of Meb... with 5+ years and ~8 marathons left to leave him in the dust...

This is what Meb realizes = sour grapes.

You've now backpedaled from has surpassed to will surpass. I've no doubt that he will run faster because Meb just did Boston/NYC every year, and never chased times.

Meb is arguably America's greatest marathoner, although in his mind he is number-one; I would say he is right there with Bill Rogers and Frank Shorter. If Rupp wins Boston, I would say he is also in that group with Meb, Rogers, and Shorter. However, if Rupp wins Boston and goes on to win another Olympic marathon medal of any color and/or another WMM, I would say Rupp is the greatest American marathoner. This fact is not lost on Meb and the omission of Rupp in his response is pure playahating. As of 2013, Rupp is no longer using a TUE and has been the most tested distance runner since that time and his coach and the NOP program has been under the microscope since that time. Rupp has had some really good races the last couple of years, but nothing so off-the-charts one should assume talent, coaching, and determination can't achieve. These are the facts, yet some people want to ignore the fact and prefer to believe that there is some super secretive Area-21 type stuff responsible for Rupp's success.

I would have had more respect for Meb if just came right out and expressed his disdain for Rupp. Personally, unless I knew for a fact -or at there is hard evidence to suspect Rupp or any American athlete was cheating when they toed the line in Boston, there is no way I would not be rooting for them.

I wonder whether there would be as much trashing of Rupp if he had competed alongside Hall, Ritz and Meb during their prime years. Right now, Rupp is it for the US Men's marathon. He is getting big checks to run marathons. Nike is writing him huge checks and has set him up with a full staff of trainers/coaches and state of the art everything. Every other male marathoner in the US is making pennies by comparison and has very little support by comparison. So, when you see one guy getting so much more financially, competitively and in terms of support while everyone else in the US men's marathon gets scraps by comparison, you are going to be pretty ticked off if that guy has at the least pushed some boundaries on performance enhancement (thanks to a well funded Nike program) if not done some out right cheating but did not get caught. That makes everyone blind to the fact that even with some PED use that is more than likely nothing worse than any E. African has done, Galen Rupp is still a huge talent and would be the top US marathoner by a lot right now totally clean. It is the unknown benefit Galen has from whatever happened at Nike that lets people totally discount his natural ability and be at best ambivalent about his accomplishments. It is a bit sad because I do not believe that Galen would ever do anything that he knew was crossing the line. AlSal is a huge personality and probably had Rupp convinced that they were always playing well within the lines.

I don't think Meb is "Jealous" of Galen - but I don't think he much cares for Rupp or how his cadre of supporters handle things.

First you need to understand the NIKE History. Bob Kennedy was Nike's guy in the 1990s. Then Meb took that over in the 2000s. Then, it became Galen Rupp. When Rupp became the guy, Meb was given a significantly lower contract offer which was made under the assumption that he was going to age/fade away. (This was around 2010/2011, about one year after after Meb won NY). In essence, this has just given Meb a chip on his shoulder. I don't know if I would call that jealousy, more like, anger or frustration. I once asked Meb about this and he was well aware that Nike was going to start putting their eggs in another basket - but I think he was still peeved that sponsors/racers were writing him off so quickly. He was still 36.

Since losing the Nike support, Meb is well aware of the shadow that has been cast over the NOP and doping. Meanwhile, Meb continued to do things the right way. Again, toeing the line with your financial future dependent on a place-wise finish - that has to be upsetting if you know others are working in the grey area.

In the 2016 Trials, the world couldn't wait to see what Galen would do in the marathon. And it was clear Meb wanted to take a swipe at Galen during the race, because Rupp was basically perched right over his shoulder during the pack-breaking surge. It was tactical racing on Galen's part - who had never run a marathon before and was debutingin pretty brutal conditions. But nevertheless, if I were Meb, I'd be pissed that he was riding my shoulder the way that he did.

The TL;DR version of this is that Meb has plenty of reasons not to like Galen or NOP. But I wouldn't call Meb "Jealous". And that will be the case even if Galen wins Monday, goes on to win Chicago or NY this fall or next year, maybe even another Olympic medal. Because the "doubt" will always be there and - being around the sport - the casual running fans know and love Meb so much more. Meb really puts himself out there, he is a genuinely friendly guy, and Meb also gets it about having to self-market. Galen, on the other hand, is much more reserved and just gives off a "less approachable" vibe. I say that while noting that I've met Galen a few times. He is a nice enough guy, but he lacks the charisma that Meb has.

everyone doesn't have to be the same and market themselves though, I don't understand the hating guys for their personality thing

its not like Rupp is rude or arrogant towards people, so maybe he's not really out going but he doesn't have a bad personality either so there shouldn't be a problem....

I’ve had the opportunity to spend time with Meb on several occasions, both when he was in Mammoth Lakes and beyond. I’ve also had a couple interactions with Galen. Personality-wise, you couldn’t get more different guys. Both are great runners, and at the end of the day, will be considered amongst America’s greatest marathoners. But I don’t believe Meb is jealous of Galen. Meb knows what he’s accomplished. Like many others who follow the sport, I believe Meb has a hard time “rooting” for Rupp, with all the uncertainty surrounding his coach and program.

Meb is a great ambassador for the sport. By Galen’s personality and nature, not so much. But that doesn’t mean they’re not both great athletes and competitors. Time will tell what the outcome is for Galen, but we all know right now, where Meb stands in the history of American running, and what he’s accomplished.

I have zero respect for Coaches A, B and C. The fact that they won't go on the record simply shows they are gutless and petty. Given the questions posed, what harm would have come from going on the record? Obviously they themselves have no respect for Nike or Rupp, so it's not as if they'd have burned any bridges. It's not like Rupp has the Lance Armstrong-esque power to ruin anyone's life.

Nameless and cowardly opinion-spewing should be left to the likes of us on the LetsRun message board (myself included, obviously).

I've said it on here many times before - it all wreaks of jealousy towards Galen. A shame really.

It is clearly about more than jealousy because other runners who have had success like Galen don’t garner the same negative comments.
