Ryun destroyed Keino every time they raced at normal altitude. My money would have been on him. Clarke? Who knows? But he had his best chance taken away, as did Haase.
The unluckiest athletes we've never heard of are all the talented European, American, and Austrolasian runners from the 90s who were swamped by EPO HGH North and East African cheaters.

Ryan Sheridan, won NY states in xc as a sophomore, ran I think 4:09 for the mile indoors and then developed kidney stones and didn't run the rest of highschool. Freshman year of college made it to Jr. Worlds Xc and beat German Fernandez. Multiple time ncaa all-american but his running just didn't pan out because of chronic kidney issues and muscle strains from drinking too much water to reduce kidney pain.
oh man. my running buddies and i were 1 grade above him, also in the northeast, and totally convinced he would be the next big thing. when he was 4th at VCP as a sophomore for FL regionals it was a huge deal at the time.

That's a good one.
In 1980 Lisa qualified for the US Olympic Swimming Trials, however the United Stated boycotted the 1980 Olympics and Lisa was unable to compete, In 1984, 1988 & 1992 Lisa finished 4th in the US Olympic Marathon Trials making her the Olympic Team Alternate. (The top three in the Olympic Trials qualify for the Olympic Team). In 1988 Lisa ran in the US Olympic Track and Field Trials and finished 5th in the 10,000 meters running a PR of 32:12. In 1996 Lisa finished a disappointing 19th in the US Olympic Marathon Trials. Finally, heading into the 2000 Olympics Lisa was on her way as a Professional Triathlete. After Lisa finished 4th American at the US Triathlon National Championships she ended her competitive career.

Lisa Rainsberger (Kate's mom).
She was 4th at three consecutive US Olympic Marathon Trials and never made the team.
I think she was 4th in the marathon trials once and 4th in the 10,000m (both in 1988).
She also was third in the Olympic Trials in swimming (they take top 2)
Follow that up with training for the 2000 Olympic Trials in Triathlon and she develops clots that ended her pro career.
I present to you Ryan Steinbock:
https://m.tfrrs.org/athletes/3261028
He was a DIII cross country all american, runner up in the indoor 5000 at nationals, had a PR of 14:18 in the 5000 and 9:08 in the steeplechase, 8:24 in the flat 3k, 4:13 in the mile.
Here's the kicker: he never won his conference meet, in anything. In his whole career (well except for a DMR).
He was a historical talent for his school, Dickinson College, but happened to overlap with some generational talent at their conference rival, Haverford. Haverford had Chris Stadler, Avi Bregman, Charlie Marquardt and Jordan Schilit, who between them had college PRs of 14:01 for the 5k (Stadler) 8:51 for the steeple (Bregman) 3:46 (Marquardt) and 13:59 for the 5k (Schilit). Try as he might in many different events, he just couldn't win his darn conference. The year he was runner up in the 5000 at nationals, John Crain, who was a D3 stud and now running very well for ZAP fitness, denied him his title. Just an incredible happenstance of timing in his career to not win his conference.
German Fernandez. Ran almost all of his PRs in his freshman year of college, and he was one of those kids who turned 18 as a frosh. He ran a really good 3:34 in 2012 as a 21 year old but hasn’t really done anything impressive since then. Idk if he even competes anymore and he’s only 27.

Ryan Hall. He basically had about a four year marathon career due to his health issues. He went from a 2:06 in London 2007 at only his third marathon to multiple DNF and DNS by 2012.
Yeah but have you seen his wife?
Meh.... my wife's hotter.
Wanjiro for sure. Star athlete falls 4 meters to his death, initially ruled a suicide by Kenyan police.
Honorable mention to Mo for having drug testers come right in the middle of a 90- minute shower.
Second runner up, Rupp, for having a lab director mistake testoboost for testosterone and then tragically die before he could confirm the story and defend Rupp against allegations leveled by his own former coach.
