Norwegian runner Sondre Moen 59:47 in Valencia half. 3rd best half by a non-african ever

Here we go again, a runner gets a great result and the US run population throws stones at it to justify their own mediocrity.

Sondre is a clean athlete and had a great performance. Stop typing and start training. With our population and wealth the US should have 10 runner's under 60mins for the half by now. We only have one!

Get off your couch and go do a tempo run. That way, you have a chance to make it two.

Hall is genetically European but ethnically American.

Could you report on this? Maybe do some research and inform people who visit the site. Also, how are you differentiating between NOP Runner’s you like and don’t like? Or people you like who also go to Dr.Brown?

Not quite. I don't think the coach has ever been caught writing prescriptions or been caught giving illegal substances. But he was convicted of forgery. Perhaps some Norwegians on this site can fill us in?

At first, congratulations to Moen. By the way, I was and still am a fan of Marius Bakken (who is a doctor nowadays by the way).

And here comes the but. I just cannot forget the norwegian skiers and the use of asthma drugs, even without asthma (they have at lest tried it as it came out recently by media). I believe that Martin Jonsrud Sundby has an asthma diagnosis (?) but it's well known that he used it against the rules, too much. A frequent use of these drugs creates some anabolic effect. The cold weather here in the northern countries increases the risk for an exercise induced asthma (especially XC skiers are in a high risk, frequently competing at sub zero degree temperatures). But i'm not sure anymore is some world class endurance athlete really is an asthmatic regardless he/she has the diagnosis. OR has he/she used the drugs a long time and big amounts.

I just CAN'T AVOID to be a little suspicious when Moen shaves off 2,5minutes from his previous PB:

I am also very sceptical to the use of asthmatic drugs among Norwegian skiers. It is claimed by the Norwegian skiing association that their use of them is not unethical, rather it is line with best practice (how you treat these conditions).

Moreover, it is claimed that there is no benefit of them except that the athletes can now compete at the same level as if they did not have asthma. The latter claim is of course of incorrect and the logic is flawed, since this can never be checked.

To comment on this:

Sundby has since childhood had serious problems with asthma. Its true they at one race used too much, knowlingly or not. But in harsh conditions he struggles so much that he has to quit races.

Regarding Sondre:

Hes what you call a running nerd. Very nice guy, but does not but run as far as I know. For years thats all hes been focused on. Hardcore focus on running, staying at altitude for months in very simple conditions. His time is insane, but his focus during his career have rarely been to peak and run good at competitions. Its been to train to achieve a high enough ability, and THEN try to peak his shape. Its a reason he rarely competes and has few national medals, even though if he wanted he could've loads off them.

Uh, that's SIX YEARS. I went from 4:38 as a HS sophomore to 3:58 as a college redshirt junior. Is that suspicious?

I certainly understand this. And one would be unwise to look past it blindly. However, there are circumstances that people need to know. During the investigation of Evertsen, the police did a raid at his house, and found to banned substances, can't remember which, but which he claims to be used for some patients of his, and those patients confirmed this story. Otherwise, Evertsen has had no claims against him, and no ties to performance enhancing usage for athletes.

As for some background on Sondre, he was a huge talent in his teens, running 14:02 at 17, and 1:02.5x for the half when he was 19. He later got an injury under his foot that took 3 seasons to recover from. After that, he has had a pretty steady progression. 59:47 was of course surprising, but considering his 1:02:19 half felt like a training run (according to him), that he his potential was far greater that the times he had run

I don't think you get fanboy's point. Moen showed a little bit of talent as a 20 year old in 2011, then was a 28-low type from 2012-2016, then BAM. (I am guessing you had some progression in the years it took you to go from 4:38 to 3:58.)

as pointed out by Norwho, SNM was injured on and off for a long time. He was very close to retirement at some point.

Finally a Moen who generates more discussion than the legend, Brandon Moen.

You will have a hard time employing "ethnic" criteria to explain Hall's affiliation to the American state, a civic organization that was founded and perpetuated despite, and even in open disregard for, the ancestral, cultural and religious - read, ethnic -

For those who say Moen is not tested, he is tested several times per year by ADNO alone.

Anti-Doping Norway takes between 2000-3000 doping samples of Norwegian athletes a year. Between 10-15 athletes are banned for a doping offense a year.

I think they're confusing Norway with Kenya and Ethiopia.

eh...what? 10-15 norwegians banned for a doping offense a year?! Where do you find these crazy numbers?? There has been

maybe 6-7 athletes banned since 2010, and that INCLUDE JOHAUG AND SUNDBY, which isnt actually correct to put

in the "doping"category. So yes, Norway has a strict testing system. But no, not many is caught. Mainly because dopers in Norway is frozen out completely. We dont tolerate it.
