Why are there so few murders per capita in East Asian countries?

East Asia? You mean where? Its a lot of countries in a big area. I can only speak for Japan. I lived here for 8 years. I can say it is amazingly safe and I have never felt threatened at all. I wall in the dark forest at midnight,In darkened parts of the city and people just ignore me. I just walk on by.

I think there is a lot of under-reporting of a wide range of crime in Asia. I see a lot of violence, hear of a lot of violence in other countries, and all my friends in other Asian cities have stories of violence. Even Japan.

First of all, to many westerners, Americans especially, it SEEMS (you need to back it up with fact!) there's no gun in Taiwan (or anywhere in East Asia), because you don't ever see one there. Even police don't carry one when they are on duty in the street (no fear of sudden attack by a nut job with gun). The fact is that the [bold]gun ownership in Taiwan is much higher[/bold] than in its neighboring countries in the region (e.g. ~twice as high as in Japan) AND one may attribute the higher homicide rate to this factor.

Forgot to mention, regarding the 2nd Table, one can see how low the homicide rates in the tightly controlled gun ownership countries in Asia and in Europe in general, as compared to in the States.

There maybe some under reporting in crime rates in Asian countries. But is under reporting worse than that in the States??!! Trust me, the media love would love to report the under reporting back in Asia as much as, if not even more enthusiastic than, in the States.

PS-I did find this article on Japan very interesting. While violent crime is very low since the Enola Gay flew over, sex crimes are apparently underreported and suicide rates are among the highest in the civilized world. Not sure what to make of that.

Part of it is cultural perhaps but you have to also understand numerous East Asian countries have much harsher punishments for criminals than America and in Europe. Basically the idea is if someone commits murder in one of those countries and they don't have a lot of money and connections, it's one life for another.

I lived in East Asia, as well as Singapore, for a few years. Here are the main reasons I think:

1. Very restrictive gun control; outside of some hunting enthusiasts, almost no one has a gun.

2. Social cohesion, meaning people are less likely to deviate from the behavior of the crowd (murder would be a significant deviation). There are downsides to this as well, as people go along with certain normalized behaviors (imperial Japan, tolerance for certain types of corruption/cheating that we find reprehensible).

3. Homogeneity may play a part, but Singapore is incredibly diverse (racially, linguistically, religiously, economically) and is one of the safest places in the world.

4. Economic prosperity; here I’m thinking about Singapore, Korea, Japan, Taiwan primarily. But in general these countries are fairly well off, and there’s definitively a relationship between wealth and violent crime. Crime is much higher in nearby countries with higher poverty levels (Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.).

5. Social mores. People in Singapore are, for the most part, very well behaved and respectful of the law. Same in Japan, and to an extent Korea. People will rarely jaywalk even if there is no traffic in Korea (I once got stopped and questioned by two police officers when I did it). I think a difference in Korea is that under the cloak of anonymity, they tend to be more boorish (some very rude and aggressive drivers there, unlike Singapore and Japan).
