No that's wrong. Meet Management 101 is that you don't punish the kids who did nothing wrong to give a break to the kid that screwed up.

If someone is late for a race, you don't make the kids who were on time wait for 10 minutes for the screw up.

If you move this kid to another section it makes it harder for that section to qualify because there are more kids in the race, more congestion, etc. Plus he was one of the higher seeds who are deliberately split up when making the sections so the section he was moved into would have more higher seeds.

Just a sign of the times - punish the ones that do it right in favor of the poor little kid that messed up. Really sad.

Now, while I thought he should have been allowed to let run in the opening round, I"m not so sure about that. Yes, this kid is a stud who was going to make NCAAs in Eugene but now he doesn't have to run two races. I would have much preferred what I heard they were going to do - have him run a solo race last night after the 10k - if he beat the slowest time qualifier he'd be in the final (but only if they let 25 in). That way, he'd be tired like everyone else.

Now the kid is being rewarded for not having his bib.

A source just called and told me that Michigan State sophomore Justine Kiprotich wasn't allowed to run at NCAAs today because he showed up at the start line without a bib on his jersey (I believe he had his hip number on).

There needs to be more information given. If he had in a top that was the same solid color as the team uniform then he can wear it. As an example, throwers throw in long sleeves all the time. As long as the color matched then he is good to go.

(I know that non matching uniforms is a new rule and I believe it may only be punishable by a fine to the institution, not a refusal of participation)

If that's the case, the only actual issue is the missing bib number. Is that enough to stop an athlete from competing? I assume the jury of appeal decided that it was not and that this was an officials error. Hence, the advancement to the next round.

As a guy who competed in college and ran road races for over 25 years, never once did I fail to put a bib on my singlet. The runner is an idiot. No excuses.

Bibs serve absolutely no purpose (or at least no purpose that couldn't be dealt with in a more efficient manner, like numbers on jerseys, or photo ID at check in). Most youth meets have completely eliminated them. And if you have a FAT timer who knows their stuff, you don't even need hip numbers.

That being said, the fact that he didn't even have his jersey on is crazy. I'm not sure they'd let you run a high school meet without your team jersey on...

If his team was wearing green with white and he showed up in white with green it is an NCAA violation now. However the only thing an official is suppose to do this year is give them a warning and give them a chance to fix it. Why not do what every other sport has done for 100 plus years and issue a team uniform with a number and name on the back. The whole bib thing is a joke and totally unnecessary.

The worst is at professional meets where people like Maggie Vessey design her own uniform as a way to monetize her participation, but the bib is bigger than her outfit and ends up getting pinned on top in a random fashion.

I think it is one more area where it makes it more difficult to market track and field to a broader audience.

It will be amazing. Now I'm only fine with that if they let 25 into the next round, not 24. Just have him run this round to get tired out. The 1500 isn't a race that's run for time. It's often tactical. So you can't not take the final time qualifier.

Just got a call a bunch of coaches with kids in the final are filing a protest saying it's unfair that he'll be fresh and their kids won't .

As one coach said to me, "Do you think they'd let a guy play in the NCAA basketball tournament without his jersey on?" I said, "No but they'd probably hold up the game while the trainer let him find one."

Maybe the Olympics will catch up with the advancements of youth meets.

Or youth meets aren't as organized as the Olympics.

What about the timing mat at the NCAA DI Track & Field Western Championship?

I am not sure it was a timing mat but it sure looked like a timing mat across the track when I watched the 10,000 meter races. These were the only races I watched on the live stream from Austin. If I remember correctly the item in question was blue, about a foot wide, and appeared to be at least 1/4 high above the track surface.

If it was a timing mat then bibs would be required for timing if the chips were on the back of the bids.

The other thing that surprised me was there were 3 or 4 people handing out cups of water or something other fluid to runners as they went by in the races. I checked the temperature and it was reportedly 82 degrees in Austin at the time of the 10,000 meter races. Although I agree water may have been useful I wonder if the runners needed even at the beginning of the race. I don't think they went around 4 times when I saw it being handed out in the men's race. I never knew until know that water was allowed to be given out during a race on a track--at least any NCAA race.
