I get the idea of starting with a clean slate but 2005 feels way arbitrary. What athletics needs before expunging the records is a truth and reconciliation commision. Offer athletes, coaches, administrators immunity if they tell their full story. Make that offer to everyone. Find out who did what and how they got away with it. Then expung the record bills and start with empty record books.

the makings of a compromise where the Western European countries lose records and the Eastern European countries both lose records, but maybe gain some back too. Alan Webb, I think, would have the world record in the mile but honestly, what they should be doing first of all is knocking out all the clearly doped records from Eastern Europe and China from the 1980s and 1990s. When it is proven, as it has been, that they had massive doping programs involving all their athletes, you scrub them from the record books and take back their medals. Then what do you do about the weights, relays, women's 100m/200m/1500m/5000m/10000m/marathon and other suspicious remaining results? Deal with them on a case by case basis.

There needs to be a Spanish Inquisition with the use of lie detectors and 'enhanced interrogation" procedures.

There needs to be truth…and consequences.

Two options -

1. Isotope test WR holders. If the isotopes have had time to clear the system, athletes must submit hair and bone samples to be record eligible. To back up chemical testing, athletes must undergo lie detection analysis. In the case of the deceased, the body must be exhumed and/or a seance performed.

2. Wipe the slate clean and start from today. The bodies of all possible record holders will be cryogenically frozen in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault for testing in the future using more advanced techniques.

Good idea, but it is unlikely IAAF will do this. They can't even correct the women's 800m situation. That is a bogus record, and the Rio Games race was a joke.

Paula is just a self-serving has been. Doped to the gills when she ran and can't accept that her doped records are getting trashed.

I am glad that her name will, once and for all, be gone from the record books!

So for example, you have many times thrown out such as Ben Johnson, but that was a 9.79, which is nowhere near the WR. And no other thrown out mark is close to any stranding record. There are a couple that weren't ratified, like Ivan Pedroso LJ, which beat Powell, but it was not due to drugs.

With this new policy say goodbye to Marion Jones, Tyson Gay et al from the record books completely. (Gay still holds the national record). Gatlin is gone too. New 100m American record holder will be ??? I have to look it up

For women Carmelita Jeter, who most, including myself, always thought was dirty due to her stranger career trajectoryand relationship to Mark Block, has had her '09 samples tested frequently and they were clean. Guess she deserves the benefit of evidence. Her career was ruined by drug accusations in terms of endorsements, which she never received. It would be shameful if she were clean that whole time .

Hello, you said " Mark Bloc" . Wonder why she never tested positive as with the majority of elite athletes.

Notice after 2013 her career took a dive after her Super Strength performance in London the previous year. That W100m stands out as a race between 3 beasts.

Never clean, Check out her 2009 season when she dropped her pb at The Berlin Games and then went on to run 10.60s at the end of the season.

Now that's what I call re-writing history.

In any case it would be better to wipe out those records AFTER 2005 as "suspicious" due to the dramatic drop in times in long distance events.

IAAF, just leave the darn thing ALONE for the time being and just start to SERIOUSLY crack down on cheaters from here on. Both athletes and coaches involved.
