IMHO, the American Fork guys did distance running...our sport, proud. The desire and guts and drive was obvious. Two of them went out at 58. They ran with total abandon straight into the world of serious pain. How they ran is what keeps distance runners, so interested in the sport always. Watching them, I could see the greats of all time, with them ,and just smiling. I for one, was really proud of all four of them.
Looked like 3 college kids and one of their younger brothers running against HS kids. Not just the speed but physical presence.
Clinger the younger ran an excellent race under what likely felt like a lot of pressure to him.

When the results mattered most: The SS div 1 finals.
1 Cortes, Isaac 12 Great Oak 4:04.01; - 3.61s
2 Dodds, Spencer 12 Great Oak 4:05.47; +3.95s
8 Fountain, Solomon 11 Great Oak 4:10.28; -0.23s
9 Spencer, Cole 12 Great Oak 4:11.69; +2.95s
Dodds and Spencer BOTH were nearly 4 and 3 and seconds respectively slower one week later.
What the GO guys did last year is fantastic and I don't mean to take anything away from it. If all 4 of them had run near their PRs in a 4 x 1600 relay, they could have run well under 16:40. What makes what AF did so remarkable, though, is that their 3 top guys all had to run near-perfect time trials with no competition and no one to pace them and dodge lapped runners at the same time, even as their 1st/slowest guy had to run a PR to set up the next 3. Getting your top 3 to run perfect time trials all alone under those conditions is pretty amazing.

Nope, the 1600m and the mile are NOT the same damn thing. They're different. Close, but different. A significant small amount. 880 yards isn't 800 meters. 440 yards isn't 400 meters. If his name isn't Jim Ryun, Tim Danielson, Marty Liquori, Alan Webb, Lukas Verzbicas, Matthew Maton, Grant Fisher, Drew Hunter, or Michael Slagowski, then he's not considered a sub-4:00 high school miler. And if he ran a sub-4 1600m relay split, ditto on that. Alan Webb ran a sub-4 1600m relay split in the DMR at the Penn Relays at least once -- and it doesn't count as a sub-4 MILE!

Really? Feels like BYU gets a decent amount of talent each year and does little more than meet expectations with that talent. I reckon there are 20-30 college coaches who could achieve the same success with BYUs recruits.

I don't agree.
If I remember, BYU was ranked 13th last year in the preseason and ended up 7th. At one point after upsetting #1 Syracuse they jumped up to as high as #3 in the nation.
I'm not taking the time to look back but I think that BYU improving on their pre-season ranking is definitely a common occurrence. I.e. BYU and Ed Eyestone often exceed expectations.
