Because they can., tough guy. Try it yourself if you dare.

I have, bro. But no one cares if you cry if you ugly. Who wants to cheer up or console an unattractive guy?
Girls can cry and they have a guy for them unless they ugly too or from the island of Lesbos.
?
It hurts because it’s true.

Your mom. Bring her to the meets and have her meet you at the finishing line.
"Peter Snell cried". So would you if your a*se was hanging out from gastro-enteritis. "Roger Bannister collapsed after a race". So would you if you were the first guy on the planet to beat 4 minutes on about 25 m/w.
Because boys are taught to be tough and repress emotions that lead to crying. 'Cry Baby!' was heard by every male LRer here in their past. You know this to be true.
Women, otoh, are more free to express themselves, being developmentally superior to the knuckle-draggers.
That said, millennial boys may change this disturbing trait. it's a beautiful thing.
Oh my, pass the tissues......
Male runners don't show emotion, until they turn 49 and start pounding tables in frustration after getting out kicked by female Kenyans.

This is the answer.
Wasn’t there a study done a while back that showed it’s due to blood pressure drop? That women’s bodies can’t recover as quickly as men and have a larger dip in blood pressure.
Something like that.

True, but we also vow to train our brains out and pond them into the ground next year.
I cry hysterically whenever i get sub 20min 5k.
So simple an LRer can get it wrote:

This response is classic

But not immediately after the finish!

True, we generally wait until the awards banquet where we can't see the people laughing at us.

"some sort of thing" is the answer? Well, that's vague.

I said or something, Jerry. Or something.
Michael Corleone was a Godfather. Is that close?
It's related to testosterone levels. It's not a choice so much as a symptom, if you want to call it that. Lower your testosterone is the more likely you're going to be crying after being pushed to the limit. Really not that complicated or a big deal.

This is mostly true. Men have a better ability to constrict blood vessels in their legs than women stabilizing their blood pressure. If a female athlete already has low blood pressure they are of course more vulnerable to this happening.
If someone who is prone to this consumes large amounts of water without electrolytes before a race it can further drop their blood pressure and make the problem even worse.
It took me a long time to figure all of this out because unfortunately and hard to believe most physicians are not looking for this when they hear their patients are passing out at the end or after races.
As far as the crying. I don't know. I think men get just as emotional but are just bound by the social construct that it's not manly to cry.
I went to my first collegiate cross country meet in the late 90's and I first witnessed the women urinating on themselves and I thought WTF?
Now when I go to a cross meet there are tons of girls falling out like a sniper shot them as soon as they cross the line and then get stepped on by the other incoming runners. Funny though, you don't see them falling out and being overly dramatic when they finsh the 5K or 10K on the track.
It seems like nothing but an act for sub par out of shape runners.

I have yet to see a girl run on Pure Hate in real life. But that's probably because I don't attend meets...
