Shannon Rowbury entered in Brussels 5000m, will she break the AR?

Rowbury has looked very efficient in her running form this season and I think that the frustration of placing 4th in the Olympics will help propel her to a new American 5k record of 14.:40.

I don't see how knowing you are one of the best athletes in the world and watching another athlete 50 meters in front of you at the halfway point will benefit her. Hopefully there are several 14:3x types to compete against, but Ayana's fast pace won't help Shannon at all.

I hope that Rowbury breaks the record, and not just because I'm generally a fan. Even if you are a NOP hater, you have to agree that women's 5000m AR is way soft and that the 5000m is ripe for improvement in the US. We are competitive in the 1500m, steeple, and 10000m (relatively speaking...30:13 is a fantastic time). Meanwhile it seems like a rarity when many American women break 15:00. If Rowbury can take the record down, I could see several women chipping away at it. If the 5000m AR starts approaching 14:30, I think women in general will set a higher bar and be shooting for 14:45 instead of sub 15. Then we might become competitive in the 5000m.

That actually benefited Molly Huddle a lot on her way to the 10000m AR and would benefit Shannon even more as she has a knack for drafting, not to mention that she is a better racer than Molly.

Ever heard of Jordan Hasay?

I'm not sure what her racing plans are but next time she races 5000 meters she has a 50% chance of breaking the AR.

Actually, it will depend on who else in the 14:30-14:40 range is in the race and how they pace their races. If SR is able to latch on to someone who has a fairly steady pace in the AR range, she can just sit back and ride them until 400 to go and then blast for the record. Alternately, someone in that range could be offered a few thousand dollars to set a pace like that for her. That's chump change for Nike to have another advertising point. If she gets caught in No Woman's Land, she has little chance.

To be fair... we aren't competitive in the 10000. Huddle almost lapped Infeld in that race, and Infeld is both a clear second best at 10K (maaaaaaybe Shalane) and ran a PR.

Basically, in both the 5 and 10, Huddle is the only American even sniffing a medal.

(Yes, I know Infeld got bronze last year, and it's still crazy that happened.)

Do you think Linden could break the AR without changing her training? Her fastest 5,000 was 15:08.64, in 2011. That's exactly 26 seconds off the AR.

Fair enough but also remember if you go back in the not so distant past we've had Shalane, Infeld, and Goucher medal at 10k and Huddle was close. If not for the freaky fast times in this Olympics, Huddle's AR is one of the fastest times ever run. As a nation, the US is clearly capable of producing 10000m medalists, we just aren't very deep so far at any given time. Meanwhile, in the 5000m, we look like USA distance running of the mid 90s. I think this will soon change, however. We are very competitive at 1500m, steeple, and 10000m. The hole will eventually be filled in.
