Looks like he's in the attack mode and rolling, his legs are under him and he seems to even be saving a gear!
US HS runners are really pushing it; great facilities across the country, instant access to the Internet for motivation, inspiration and advice.

Actually, this is a very good question: from 1:48 even-split no pacers to 1:46-low pos split with good comp and fast track is not a huge stretch. Definitely more doable than 3:53.

Secondly, this approach is why you are slow and why so many distance runners don't do speed work. You train speed; you get faster. Lift weights, speed drills, 30/60m... it works.

A school with a climate and program suited to Slagowski's talents. A school with a long list of sub-4 miles; perhaps even the most of any college in the land.
A school with a hallowed track venue. A school that hosts one of the best Diamond League meets in the world every year... With plenty of natural surface trails.

If those splits are accurate, this performance indicates an ability quite a few seconds better than 3:59.53. Perfect first lap, 2:02-3 at 800m, giving away three seconds, then a 57 third lap solo! Good of him to be able to hang on the last lap after that. I'm thinking that 3:56-57 is on the way this season if there is adequate competition and pacing. In a high school only mile race against Hunter at the end of the season in good conditions, there would be a pacer presumably at about 1:59-2:00 and unless they are slowing the third lap for the kick, they could reach that 3:56-57. Otherwise, a race with collegians/pros would do the trick. Very impressive.
Austin Tamagno know's sub-4 pace by heart, he could easily take them out at 1:59-2:01
Try 3:55 for both if they run Pre Classic.

Tamagno looks like he has a 3:58 in him this season if he gets in the right race. He needs to be at Pre as well.

You must be another distance guy with no speed. Slagowski has much better upside than Hunter in the mile, guaranteed. Too much speed. Everyone knows Hunter would would beat Slagowski in the 2 mile, but who cares? In races that require an element of pure speed, Hunter is at a disadvantage. Hunter's strength might hold out over Slagowski in a mile. Right now I'd bet on Slagowski in a mile because Hunter was towed to his times. Slagowski basically ran the last half mile on his own in wind and rain. In the end, speed kills, and Hunter doesn't have much speed.

Upper body, yes. Slagdog has better knee lift and rear kick though, especially in high school. Dude looked so damn smooth. Very different from Hunter.

That's what I thought too. Seeing the video, it looked like his teammate pacer ran out of gas and MS almost ran into him a couple of times on the back stretch and then overtook him after the turn on lap 2 - (3 seconds slower than lap 1?).
His dad shoots better footage on his iphone, or whatever it is, than a lot of pro productions I've seen. Dude needs to go pro. :)
