Track workouts are great for all distances up to a marathon as it improves leg speed, efficiency and economy - best HM and marathon runners in the world are all without exception world class track runners. Now if you feel that someone trying to do a hard workout for a HM should not be within miles of a track then you clearly don't understand the sport and would obviously agree that someone "running" 50 laps at pedestrian pace should be banned from ever setting foot on a track. Unless of course you believe that tracks are only for joggers and walkers.
I 2nd this. GPS is also inaccurate, it always over estimates your pace. So to get a true indicator of your pace in reality, nothing is going to compare to the track. GPS will never come as close!
That's why so many people bonk their races. They get an inflated sense of pace from GPS, and assume they're about 5 to 10 seconds per mile faster than what they really are.
