A Rare Home Defeat For Cheserek: 13-time NCAA champion Edward Cheserek was second in the men’s 5,000 in 13:50.82, behind Washington’s Colby Gilbert, just the second time in eight races at Hayward Field that Cheserek hasn’t won.

Johnson said Cheserek was “dinged up” and “pushing through” for the sake of running in front of the home fans.

“That’s who he is, and the type of commitment he has,” Johnson said. “Probably next time we’ll exercise veto power there no matter what.”

Gilbert didn't "crush" Chesererk, he beat him; Ches let him.

I'm a Husky fan, no matter what the program has squandered over the years, but Gilbert didn't throw down on Ches. As he said himself in the interview, he was waiting for Ches to turn it up and blow by him. Watching him run the curve, you can see there wasn't much more in his legs; Ches could've nailed that down.

I'm a huge fan of Gilbert and what he's accomplished quietly (rojo: "who IS this guy?") over the last few years. However, let's not pretend he's quite at Ches' level across the board; 800m-10,000m.

Cheserek COULDN'T "nail that down" on the day, so instead he shut it down so that people like you could make excuses for him.

I was there too. Colby's last mile was 4:06 (63-62-61-60). Ches was working hard to stay with him. You could see that in his face and his body language, as many people on here have already noted. If it was a training run Ches wouldn't have gone with him, he would have stayed on the pace set by the pacers (4:28). Clearly Ches didn't let him go, Ches tried to make the pace change for 1400m and couldn't get around Gilbert.

Of course Ches will bounce back, great runners do, but don't take away from the performance Gilbert put in... he closed a 5k in 4:06 and he did it from the front. That's kick ass!

Has anyone commented on the fact that he wasn't even spiked up? Ches was wearing flats.

It's been confirmed he wasn't wearing underwear either.

I actually root for Cheserek, believe it or not I will never refer to him as King Ches, but I have serious concerns about Johnson and Powell having their own selfish desires to milk him for points. I do not think his year round (close to it), frequent racing is conducive to a long term, successful career. I would not be surprised if he does not improve post collegiately. I hope he does fully make it on the global scene.

But at the end of the day how hard is this "racing" of his? One has to assume a healthy ches is in ~13:10 shape, considering Jenkins ran sub 1310 last year.

The guy just ran 740 indoors and a 352 DMR split and dominated XC. Have to assume not much changed and perhaps he is just dinged up a bit. A lot of racing he does I don't think is quite as all out as everyone else's racing.

He and Gilbert were wearing the same spikes. I got a picture to prove it but the thread will not let me post it.

Today, Apr. 23, at the 97th UW-WSU dual meet in Pullman, Colby Gilbert doubled and won both the 1500 and 3000, in 3:48.00/8:32.35. Conditions during these two races: 51 to 54 degrees, with steady wind as high as 15 mph, gusts to 21. He's on a roll.

NBCSN anchor Paul Sunderlund mistakenly called him "Colbert" during the Pac-12 Networks broadcast of the Pepsi Invitational.

At the dual meet, UW men won all flat races 400m and up; UW women won all flat races.
