Mary Cain 2nd to Last Place in Germany in 4:20.73

Do we even know what Cain's training has been like? My vague impression is low mileage with lots of intervals, but I've never seen anything definitive. As a coach I appreciate your that the Hunters and tinman have been explicit on how Drew is getting it done.

we don't know anything... but salazar isn't an idiot - he doesnt' want to be the coach who ruined mary cain by working her to death.

I suspect she is working at something like 70% of what a rowbury does, with an emphasis on aerobic development. Note that Cain does cross country every year - that tells you salazar is focusing on aerobic development. None of the other OPJ people do XC, do they?

If Mary never returns to her 2013 form, the turning point is going to be viewed as when she made the World Championship team. At that point, Alberto threw caution to the wind, and instead of bringing her along slowly like he did with Rupp, he was entering her in races with the best runners in the world. If she competed at World Youths instead of Moscow, expectations wouldn't have gotten so astronomical for her.

It's important to point out that when she first moved to Portland Cain admitted that Salazar ramped up the volume, intensity, cross training, and lifting. If there was a slow methodical approach involved I'm not sure which part was slow. She was doing workouts with a 3:56 girl and getting trashed in workouts. They would brag about her closing workouts in 55 seconds while she was 17-18 years old and it seemed too good to be true. Now she is 19 and hasn't PR'd in how many years?

Mary Cain is just a higher profile version of A. Hadley. Instead of ridiculous volume at a young age they pumped Cain full of high intensity interval workouts as a teenager.

One difference is Rupp paid back his prize money in order to go to Oregon. Who made that call?

High volume training (mileage with long runs) over several seasons and proper speed work is far more important than working on "form." Did Frank Shorter worry about his arm carriage? No, he worried about burying the competition, which he did on a regular basis.

Salazar's form change has made Mary stiff & unnatural.......unnatural for her.

It wasn't her parents that kept her from running for her hs team. For her last couple years of high school a lot of her teammates treated her badly and weren't supportive of her (probably because of dumb hs drama and jealousy). Her parents may have had some influence but it was her choice to be coached by the boys coach and not really run for her team.

Her decision to go pro was ultimately up to her, but I don't think it's anyone's fault that she isn't doing well right now. Every athlete goes through slumps. Hopefully that's what this is. I met her in high school a few times and she was always very positive. Actually having competition and pressure from fans is probably difficult to deal with, especially for a young runner.

Cain needs to fly back out to Oregon and have a long talk with Mary Slaney.

Steroid abuse is no solution.

It's the 10 pounds of fat and different hip conformation added to those 5 pounds of muscle that's the problem.

Frank was born with perfect form so he didn't have to worry about it.
