A Finnish paper published an article in 1983 stating that Seb Coe dropped out of World Championships to avoid a doping positive

I believe he blood doped. Why wouldn't he if it wasn't against the rules at the time? It helps explain why his world record stood for so long.

All the top athletes are pushing the boundaries of the rules to get that extra edge. The big countries and the best athletes all have medical experts on their team.

Look at Salazar at the moment. He strikes me as someone who reads the rule book and works out what he can get away with in order to help his athletes.

Not true. Martina Navratilova was out for months in early 80's after a drop in performance after being diagnosed with toxoplasmosis. A large number of dancers from the English Royal Ballet also contracted toxoplasmosis while touring the Far East. Many complained of lack of energy and feeling ill. They weren't diagnosed until returning back to UK, where they were told they probably contracted it through eating undercooked contaminated meat.

What did these 3 cases have in common? All were elite athletes with heavy physical workloads. What treatment did all 3 cases undertake? Heavy course of medication and total rest.

So let me get this clear. Are you therefore saying that because some of Coe's peers were East German (and not doing particularly well in the me 's middle distances tbh) and very likely doping, then all 800 guys were working at the boundaries of what was legal? And of course the Italians were setting the workd alight over 8 & 15 in the early 80's too!

By your reasoning then we have to conclude that pretty much every athlete that won Olympic titles or set WR's must also have been doping if they were beating contemporaries who were. Steroids were being used in the 60's and weren't even illegal. So again, based on your train of thought, Snell, Ryun, Keino must have been doping as others were.

What about Ovett, Cruz, Cram. Surely if they were up there with Coe, who you assure us was taking drugs/ blood doping, then they must have been doing the same?

Or are you going to tell us that it was just Coe and thus disclose your obvious bias?

Your post has absolutely no relevance at all. When are people going to stop referring to EPO when discussing Coe?

Let's get this clear. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR COE TO HAVE USED EPO DURING HIS CAREER BECAUSE SYNTHETIC EPO HAD NOT BEEN INVENTED!

The only thing he could have done is increase natural levels of Epo through training. That is not illegal.

But there is also no reason for him to have increased his natural epo levels through training. Nor is that likely to happen.

Well put. Just one thing, Coe's 1500 pb was set in 86 not 85. This is relevant for 2 reasons:

1) blood doping was made illegal at the end of 1985. Coe was part of the research group that got the IAAF to pass this legislation.

2) At the end of 1985 UK athletics set up out of competition and out of season random testing for national level elites. This wasn't done by the IAAF until 1989.Coe would have been one of the most tested athletes in 1986. He would have undertaken random testing in competitions in the previous years.

#1 You are rushing in to deny my claim when you did not read it carefully. I posted it is unlikely Coe was clean. It still is.

#2 Doping references prior to widespread use of transfusions are like comparing apples and horses, one is not the other. Oxygen vector doping is revolutionary compared to the steroids that came before. Please do not lump all doping together as an argument.

#3 We now know the era was the start of widespread use of transfusions combined with steroids.

#4 We know for sure that athletes respond differently to the same doping regimens.

We can be sure Coe knew nothing of doping as he has repeatedly testified. Coe has apparently stumbled through life knowing nothing absolutely nothing.

The only thing I like less than anonymous sources is three decade old information used as breaking news, with anonymous sources. Who is this anonymous person? If this was true, would Coe have gone around telling people? Why did he win a gold and silver the next year.......surely he would have avoided the olympics if he avoided a lesser meet. The media needs to stop publishing stories that rely on anonymous stories. How do we know the reporter isn't just making this up?

Except Seppelt's test data shows podiums filled with athletes that were very likely dopers. Why would Coe's era be any different?

Should we revisit the list of podium athletes that were never sanctioned, and/or never tested positive?
