What dog breed could run fastest 5K? Ignoring greyhound, whippet & any specialty racing dog.

People seem to think that going a bit faster than a human is epic.

A Saluki needs an actual motorized vehicle to keep up with it.

What is their endurance like? I specified I don't think my hounds are fast enough to be competitive over 5k. I still like them @30+ miles, but I admit I don't have extensive knowledge of breeds.

They clearly exhibit the physiology of the human 3k-Marathon star.

I'm convinced my dog, a chihuahua/whippet mix, is the fastest and has the most endurance. It's too bad her owner (me) holds her back. For example, we've done a 5 mile run at 6:30 pace and 13 miles at 7-7:30 and she pulled the whole way. She won't run without a person, so I'd like to strap her to Mo Farah and see how fast she could run a 10K. I live near Nike HQ, so there are always fast runners zipping around. Whenever my dog sees them, she gets excited and tries to pick up our pace to go after them, but I can't keep up :(

Humans are slow. A Saluki could run 20k while Mo is winning a 10k.

If she's like my german shorthaired pointer, she will run until she dies. Made the mistake a few times of letting her run when it was in the 60s-70's and I was seriously worried enough to dunk her in a pool to cool her down. 40's is ideal for a dog to run that fast. BTW, confirmed pr's of 3:07 mile, 6:26 two mile, and 9:48 3 mile on the way to a 17:22 5 mile along beside a bike on a rail trail. She definitely goes out too fast so if I could get her to learn pacing, she would have ridiculous pr's;-)

Check out North American Open Sled dog racing. Teams of Shorthair/husky mix (called eurohounds, but also mixes of grey hounds/husky's-greysters) running 27.5 miles in ~90 minutes. These hybrid breeds are taking over intermediate distance sled racing.

That's 38 400 pace or an 800 in 1:16. That's 23.4 miles per hour.

sorry, didn't mean to type husky again. Greyster is actually grey hound/pointer mix. Google Eurohound and Greyster to get an idea what that kind of speed looks like!

Just watch the one where they are racing with the numbers on. They probably cover a couple of miles there and show no signs of slowing down.

I didn't see this post, but yes, easily. See my post above. Those aren't bs splits I posted. She could definitely have gone faster if it weren't for me limiting her (she was harnessed in, not free running)

Those dogs in the sled dog championship are doing 27.5 miles in around 90 minutes, somtimes faster. That's 3:16 a mile and,yes, I know it's a team but they are still running it and they're pulling a sled.

I thought so too, that's what prompted me to build my own bikejoring rig.The GSP is hooked up to a mountain bike. =)

That is totally awesome! Wow! Is that a german shorthair, and mountain bike? It sounded like a cart. I love how the dog took the corners hahaha.

That would be 10:08 for a 5k, over mud and obstacles. I'd like a setup like that to "drive" around town, go shopping etc. :)
