WTF?
WTF?
Hang on, that looks like Furman was the biggest surprise, with a differential of 8 (14th->6th) to Columbia's 7.
The both placed 18 spots higher than their national ranking, though.
Toledo women look terrible. What a fall from grace.
New Mexico women were dominant today

The truth about the Wisconsin "jogging" claims in Louisville is that they were very misleading. Schrobilgen and McDonald (and perhaps their next 2) certainly held back, but Byrne didn't shut them all down until later in the race. In fact, their 5th man fell off of their pack early and their top 4 were yelling at him (someone named Tyson?) to catch up and McDonald even started to peel off the pack to help him work back up. Once he fell off, and realizing that Michigan and Iona were going to beat them handily, Byrne instructed the rest of the guys to ease up and they were passed by a number of athletes. It was actually a smart move because it made it look like Wisco's loss to the other competitive teams was simply due to a lack of an all out effort, protecting them from scrutiny before hopefully regrouping at Wisco.
Having said that, this is still a tremendously coached, tremendously talented team. Joe Hardy is much better than his finish today. And Wisconsin was criticized last year around this time before rallying to win Big Ten's and make it through their region with ease.
Interesting. I didn't know that.
I'm definitely not writing off Wisconsin. Byrne is a great coach and like you said, there's still a ton of talent on that team. But today's result was obviously not good and they've got some serious issues to fix before Big 10s, regionals and NCAAs.

I'll add that it could have definitely been in the plans to hold back from the start, and the Byrne was just saying that to them as a reminder later on when they went by (or maybe their yelling at the Tyson guy was because they felt he should be able to handle a controlled effort by the top 4). That's just what was relayed from the people in the race, which made it seem like it wasn't the original plan, but thinking about it I suppose it could have been.
They are certainly thin though. Only 5 finishers today.
Definitely a disappointing result for them. They are no longer favorites to win the B1G. Hirsch reportedly dropping out and still no Kai or Kromer is not a good sign. Sandvold is coming around at least. But him and especially Hardy will have to be better for them to have a chance. No viable #5 in sight right now. Paging Olin Hacker?
I wouldn't be shocked to see them pull out a win at B1Gs, but the stars don't appear to be aligning for them this year.
Just found him in the B race:

Wow, this is unfortunate. Compare him to Sam Wharton who won NXN the year before him.
The math is bad.
If #3 ranked Providence finished 2nd behind #1 ranked UNM why did they score minus 3?
Full results
Wisconsin's depth has been decimated by injuries. Two guys who ran well in this meet last year didn't run and a third shouldn't have. They've basically got five guys and two of them blew up in this race.
Despite finishing 17th, they may have picked up some points.
What was the women's team average record? Is that record kept? I see it more so in high school than college-usually in college I see a points record. If the course record was 19:31, NM must have gotten at least close to the team average record.
Does anyone have the split results? What an awful timing service.
Can i nominate a Breakout Performer of the Neet for Columbia's Aubrey Myjer?
I've never heard of the guy and I follow the league kind of closely. At their last meet, he was the #6 man on the team and finished 29th at the low-key Princeton meet. Today, he was their #1 man and 19th at Wisco.
And he's a senior. He's never even run the xc conference meet in college. He did run 8:57 for the steeple last year but ddin't even score at conference. My gosh talk about a guy who perseveres and then has a dream senior season.
Looks like he was pretty good in HS. Anyone know what was up with him in college until now?

Fun fact: I hosted this kid on his recruiting trip to Dartmouth. He was the only one of my recruits in four years that didn't commit.
I know he gained some weight early in his college career and wasn't in shape but clearly he's got talent and has found something that works for him now.
I like Furman more and more.

That's really fast wrote:Wait, so Marc Scott went through 6k in 18:17, and finished in 23:35. That's a last 2k of 5:18.
That's 4:14 pace for 2k on grass.
Am I the only one really really impressed by that?
6 736 Marc Scott SO Tulsa 18:17.3 4:55
1 736 Marc Scott SO Tulsa 23:35.0 4:45
The same thing happened last year, with everybody going from 4:55 at 6k pace to 4:10-4:15 pace all of a sudden for the last 2k. The consensus was that the last 2k is short.
Within the last 2k there is negative elevation followed by elevation gain for the finish straight, however at that point the runners are going north to south. There is always going to be a tailwind at the finish unless it's 80 degrees here in WI in October, which would be the result of southerly breezes. Today the wind was out of the north up to at least 15 mph. My two cents.
I think Furman ended up 8th
