& i doubt he was fully rested for a solid 4 or 5 days before these efforts which is pre-requisite

only guys i know who have run 1'44.0 or better solo are :

Kip - 1'42.6i

Gray - 1'42.8

Kipkurgat - 1'43.9

i don't remember anyone other than these 3 breaking 1'44 solo

Why not enter his 1500m and 1000m bests for distances/times that he has actually run? Wouldn't that be a better indicator than fabricating TWO times that he HAS NOT run and guessing his 800m potential?

Wouldn't his potential at 800m and 1000m be demonstrated best by the 1000m race he actually did and pushed all-out in?

Actually he did not "have 3 more reps to run of quickening speed at shorter distance". He just had more reps at shorter distance.

52.6 and 39.2 are slower pace (albeit marginally) than 1:44.5.

The video says that this workout was done "2 weeks before he ran 2.13.09 for the 1,000m to become the 4th fastest person ever over that distance".

I don't understand your contention here? He had two weeks to rest for the 1000m, why do you feel he was not rested enough?

I of course, dove right into the thread and just took the splits at face value, didn't watch the video until I read so many dumb things written about it. So after watching the video, this guy is right, he appears to have been paced by a bike for every rep. As well as getting a running start for each one.

When you know you can run 1:43.0 in a race, trying to run 1:44.5 with a rolling start while paced by a bike does not seem too tough for the 4th fastest 1000m man in history?

I am not saying it is easy, but clearly 1:05.X and 52.X and 39.2 are well within his grasp. He is Olympic Champion after all and his personal bests are 1:43.53 / 3:28.75.

It seems the only remarkable thing about this workout is that he did a semi-legit 1:44.5 and then kept running after a 10-minute rest. The rest of it I am nonplussed by.

I personally found that bike annoying, even just watching it on a video, and thought it was dangerous riding so close to the runners.

If Makhloufi had better stamina than Coe, then he should have been a darn sight closer to his 1000m pb than 1 sec.

Mak's 1500 pb was run on the super fast (suspect) Monaco track which is Mondo and quicker than the tracks from 30 years ago.

Mak ran his 3:28,7 with even laps of 55.3, 56.2, 56.5, 40.7 and was towed the entire way by Farah.

Coe ran a second slower 30 years ago off dud pacing and was 30m+ clear at finish. He was past his best by then and easily capable of 3:28 in his prime off half decent pace.

You always run faster if there are guys infront than if youre leading by miles from far out.

This idea that Mak was in 3:26 shape in London 12 is BS. There is nothing in the stats of that race that indicate anything remotely touching that. The reason he won is that there was no one else in the field who was in better than 3:31/3:32 shape on the day. The 2 Kips were coming back from injuries. Kiprop in his form this year would have destroyed Mak in London.

He ran a 3:34.0 with closing splits of 1:50.3, 52.8, 39.3, 26.9, 14.0. Yeah he put in a 12.4 along the back straight, which opened up a gap, but that was his winning effort. He couldn't sustain that round the bend, as he slowed, and then slowed considerably in the home straight.

He was in 3:29/3:30 shape at best.

A couple of weeks before the Olympics he ran a 3:30.8 1500 on the Monaco track to come 4th. Everyone runs about a second faster there than what they do elsewhere.

10 days after the Olympic final he got beat running 1:43.7 in Stockholm going through 400 in 50.4 and 600 in 76.6.

He then had pacers in Zagreb on 4.9, and despite splits of 54.4, 1:50.8, 2:35.5, could only manage a 3:32.58, with a last 300 of 42.5. He then came 8th in Brussels 3 days later running 3:33.42.

None of these races showed anything close to 3:26 ability.

You can't go from being a 3:30 guy 2 weeks before a race to a 3:26 one, and then slow dramatically to around 3:31/3:32 as his post Olympic races suggest. It's impossible. He was a 3:29 guy max in London. Similar to the form he showed this year, although he has been more consistent in 2015

Coe's stamina and speed in a 3:32.5 Olympic final was better ~ 1:49.8, 53.2, 39.2, 25.7, 12.7. And that was his 7th race in 9 days. Mak didn't have the balls to finish the 800m in London or to attempt both events at this year's Worlds.
