As far as the topic of the thread is concerned, Jordy is definitely more an 800 guy than Ches. I wouldn't be surprised if Ches doesn't fully grasp that his ability to scorch competition in the last 300 is both strength and speed; he seems to think he has the most raw speed in any field, and that's not likely when he races distances under 5000.

I'm not convinced of this one yet. I agree the Ducks deserved to lose, but only because they made a dumb tactical decision to slow the race down absurdly in a situation where other teams have guys that are better sprinters and more speed of an exceptionally slow pace.
I don't know if I see this as being arrogant. Ches thought he was the best kicker in a 300m kick of 10,000 pace. If he was a 10,000m guy who always got rocked at anything less...I could see arrogant. But this guy has closed races down in 24.xx, and just won NCAA race over other milers in a kick. He may have been wrong, but I think Ches had enough "evidence" for him to fairly believe himself favored in a slow race, which is not arrogance. Especially in conjunction with the wind and perhaps not feeling at his best form (which may or may not be the case) I can see why he wouldn't want to lead.
If he wasn't arrogant then he certainly wasn't a prick.
I'd love to hear your take on why you feel he was arrogant, given that it isn't obvious to me at first glance.

Ches has been exposed and the young men that race him now know there is a way to beat him and no one will ever think again that he is unbeatable in any style of race. As well, Ches will probably not make that mistake again. So those that are making such strong statements about him, his coach, and Oregon - relax... That race only made future races involving him all the more exciting to watch.
Don't speak for the rest of us. I for one prefer the straightforwardness of Malmo. Not to mention he gives out more good advice on training than perhaps anyone else has on these message boards. I'm sorry you're unable to handle an opinion that differentiates from your own, but it's your loss.

Are you really suggesting that Penn will be forced to close up shop if the mighty Ducks don't show? And that they will not show because they can't deal with the fact that they got criticized for a completely ridiculous effort in an event they should have locked up easily? Are they that thin-skinned? If they are, good riddance. Go to Drake.
Most people at Penn don't give a rat's ass that Oregon is there. It's this kind of pandering that inflates the egos of primadonnas like Ches. I'm from NJ and rooted for him when he was at St. Ben's but the way he flaunted his lack of effort yesterday in the DMR and today is appalling. I'm glad my kids saw him get beat today. He didn't deserve to win.

LM, Queen Chessie showed complete disrespect towards William and the rest of the field. Complete arrogance. The only thing Williamsz missed was giving the Ducks the throat slit at the finish. It would have been the first time that obnoxious gesture would have been appropriate.

The first time I ran Penn Relays was 1974, 41 fricking years ago. It was ten times more exciting than any Relays involving Oregon. Don't believe me look up the results.

Either on of them could have kept the pace respectable but neither did...

Yes calling Cheserek "Queen" is pretty disrespectful and honestly nobody deserves that. Did he make an absolutely stupid tactical error? Yes, and I do dislike when somebody who can clearly dominate the race makes it tactical. But to personally attack him using a lame nickname does not make your opinion look any better, and I hope you rethink resorting to using name-calling.

After seeing it, I think Cheserek is not going to make it as a pro. He relies on that kick but it will never be the best in the world or anywhere near it.

I second this, but unfortunately I'm sure Flotrack has exclusive rights and it probably won't be available for the general population for a long time. Hopefully solid play-by-play pictures are posted somewhere.
As for the whole OR making or breaking Penn Relays - I agree the meet doesn't ride solely on them but let's not pretend they aren't the most attention-generating team that goes. Without them and Stanford it's essentially an East Coast meet, and for the most part just a NE America with some Jamaican high schoolers. Not that there isn't some great running tradition in that area but I mean, they label their events the Championship of America...
Imagine Oregon hadn't come. Nova would have won both the DMR and the 4x mile, with huge asterisks next to both of those performances because the best team on paper didn't show. The races may have still been entertaining to watch but who would have cared? Unless I have ties to a particular school, I only want to watch when the best is racing the best. So it's not even about UO bolstering the meet (though with their history and fan base they do as much as any school could) but about the meet actually living up to its hype by pitting the best teams against each other rather than just the teams who bother to make the trip.
Financially, the meet would be fine without Oregon. But it would also fall even further from what it once was, much as the IC4A meet has. True fans of the sport would glance with half-interest at the results.
