Like others mentioned, 4:30 is not that fast. I'd be pretty disappointed if there weren't a few wideouts or corners that could break 4:30. Heck, my freshman year in high school I ran 4:50 in gym class and was running less than 20 minutes a day. Some of these guys are definitely doing some daily cardio, they're in their peak performance age, and are far superior athletes. Plus, they don't need to follow the drug policy runners do. They're all on roids!
And I love how people refuse to recognize that NFL players are great athletes. The reason most of us ran was because we sucked at all other sports. And some of these guys have killer work ethics like my boy Tony Brown!

I agree....I don't think a single NFL player right now would come close to 4:30. Sure there are guys that have ran 45-46 or whatever in the 400 and I know 2 guys that have done that and let me tell you, they can't break 5 for the mile. Just cause they are fast doesn't mean they have endurance for anything over 800 meters. No way any NFL player runs under 4:30.
Also, for all you saying 4:30 isn't fast, stop actually training for track for a few years and instead just lift weights, gain a few pounds to get in NFL shape, and whatever else NFL players do for training and then try and run 4:30. Not so slow after all is it?

No NFL players devote the specific training required to do this.
Some may have the ability to do it within one year if they did choose to train specifically for it.
I will use myself as an example.
I played football in high school - wide receiver.
I also sprinted- 11.2, 22.5, 50.2 and a ran a 2:02 800
Then I ran track in college.
My first 1500m race was 2nd year of college and I ran 4:05, which is about a 4:25 mile.
There were a lot of track workouts and distance runs that got me there.
I doubt I could run a 4:30 mile my 1st year of college and I ran 1:55 that year.
I don't see how you run a 4:30 mile with a solid build with football training and I don't see how any football players would be putting in serious distance runs while getting ready for games or even in their off season.
I did get my mile down to 4:04 so I have a wide perspective on different levels of mile fitness.
You just proved my point. You are not a high level athlete, thus you can't comprehend what a high level athlete can do (I am not saying I am either). 4:30 is not that fast. Now if we are talking sub 4:10 or something then yes, I think it requires specific training.
He might not be a high level athlete but he is a much higher level middle distance runner than any NFL player. They are trained to do a number of very short sprints with long recoveries. A sub 4:30 mile does require specific training epsecially if you are a spinter type, you are talking around 4:10 for 1500m. No chance
Ashton eaton runs a 4:14 1500M. This is one of his worst events (he has run a 45 in the 400M and 10.2 100M). Curtis Beach is a very good 1500M runner is 6 feet and weighs 165 lbs.
Eaton weighs 185 lbs and is 6'1" tall. He "kind" of trains for the 1500m but I would argue his training isn't really that different from a skill position football player (windsprints, routes, etc).
DeSean Jackson is 5'10" and 175 lbs (soaking wet and he was listed as 5'11" in college). He looks very very small on an NFL field. From a BMI / they would be too muscular to run a 4:30 I don't think you can argue some of the smaller skill position players (DeSean Jackson, Darren Sproles) are too big.
Question really become endurance but gotta think some of these guys have the ability too, especially someone like DeSean Jackson. Remember these are grown men who have been training for 10+ years at the highest level. This isn't your crappy D3 football player who runs a five minute mile once as a freshmen for a tryout.
I don't think it would be easy but I think some of the very elite skill position players could probably do it.

A guy like this on an nfl training regiment could easily jog a 50 second quarter, walk 20 seconds, jog another 50 second quarter, etc and easily come in under 4:30.
Most of them have the talent, no doubt.
However, they would have to lose a significant amount of body mass, and with that, most of their appeal to the ladies. After all, the ladies lust after BUFFNESS.
I'm surprised it took us this long to compare to the decathlon, it seems like an obvious thing to do.
Top decathletes (Eaton, Hardee, etc.) are of similar athletic ability compared to the NFL players we're talking about, and also train somewhat similarly - a lot of weights, a big focus on explosiveness, little focus on endurance (though likely MORE than NFL players), but all in all more well rounded, AKA better at the mile.

Hardee is 6'5, 210, similar to Kapernick and Alshon. He would be right around 5:00 fresh (4:42 1500 PR).

I am a pro and I run a 2:53 mile with both of my legs cut off...I also have no brain whatsoever and am partially blind. I also have Ebola and at the time I ran that 2:53, both of my arms had been shot of by RPG's.

I bet Galen Rupp could run a 100m in 10.7. High school kids do that all the time, and he's a world class athlete! And the 100 would feel so short to him, he probably wouldn't even get tired.

However... you only take 2 decathletes, and use those examples. Eaton and Hardee are not the best 1500 decathletes.
Take all the PR's of all the athletes from the Olympic and World Champ Decathlons, and see how many might go 4:30.
Use that percentage against the number of players in the NFL

The 1500m is at least one of the events in the decathlon so comparing them to an NFL player is ridiculous as is the idea they do no training for it
They also have to train for the 400m which is a long sprint, where an NFL player is trained to sprint 40m

4:30 is not fast! Just because you can't do it despite dedicating all of your training to running doesn't mean some of the best athletes on earth couldnt do it. Nobody is saying 10 guys from each team are popping out fast miles. However, the league is filled with guys who have ability that you can't comprehend until you see it first hand and it is silly to think a handful can't run a measly 4:30

Remember the Superstars competition when even Carl Lewis and James Lofton could not break 2:00m for 800m. Ive seen a lot of track guys in the NFL, NEVER have I seen a 800m guy make it to the NFL. There is a reason. It takes so much explosive power to be in the NFL, you cant imagine.
There is no way any guy playing in the NFL NOW could break 4:30. I do think if you took an NFL player and specifically trained them, you may find one that could. DeSean Jackson, Richard Sherman, etc.
