Try having thanksgiving with just your immediate family next year. You, the wife and the kids,

It's such a relief. It took us years to get to that point.

If you must invite a guest, invite someone who doesn't have a place to go for thanksgiving. They'll be very grateful.

It IS your house. They are your guests. If they can't be gracious, then that's their problem. I've held that line from day one and while it was a little rocky at first. My in-laws now know the house rules and everyone gets along well. In fact, it is your responsibility as a host to set the tone of the visit. If you are a parent, then you should know how to redirect bad behavior.

this is one of the greatest posts to appear on LR. I actually forwarded this to a few family members. Not sure what to suggest - but thanks for a great laugh.

I guess you could say it went well for all the wrong reasons, some highlights:

we discovered the guy is not a muslim but a sikh, this set everybody aback a bit as I think they all thought they had been wrong and decided to keep quiet. As we go around the table the sister-in-law offers a Jewish prayer and included the people of Ferguson in her prayer, the agnostic then offers a moment of silence for "all of authority and law-enforcement and military under attack", followed by the sikh with a prayer for immigration reform and for "tolerance amongst the intolerant". I offered the basic homily and granddad says "Amen at last an American prayer". My wife quickly offered a toast of wine and everyone pretty much moved on while we were still trying to figure out whether that just went well or bad.

The Black Sheep arrives 30 minutes into the meal with a "I had another Thanksgiving to go to as well" line. At 12:30? Anyway he starts to be a problem, I ask him to come in the kitchen and tell him he's got 3 choices: shut up and eat, take a walk, or eat in front of the tv in the next room and watch football. He watches football. At 4:00pm I tell everyone thanks and goodbye because we are all going to go for a family jog at the track and anyone is welcome to stay but expected to do dishes if they do. Got back at 5:30, everyone had cleared out except the Black Sheep. He stuck around and had just about finished the dishes. Shook my hand and told me thanks for treating him "straight up". He told my wife a tearful thank you for putting up with him and inviting him despite everything. So everything went well as could be, until I heard my wife tell the Black Sheep we are hosting Christmas too since it went so well for the first time and he said he would be there on time.

So I got that to look forward to.
