You are just ridiculous! Yes he is 38th but with TWO GOLD OLYMPIC MEDALS while the others have what? nothing, but they have better time. That's amazing....

That is sincerely a preposterous argument. You get to run at your country's championships to get a chance at the Olympics. Do you really think there should be 80 guys in the 10k final to "increase the likelihood" that one beats Mo Farah? You'd just be looking beyond your country's top three HOPING one of your guys has an amazing week, getting into the final and then beating Mo, or whomever it is that's the favorite for the race.

What he should have said was "I'm not just going to go out there to embarrass myself, I havn't been able to train for 4 days because of my tooth infection. I'm just not ready.

Especially frustrating about Mo's British defenders is that, unlike most Americans, Brits tend to be more cynical of manufactured hero worship and have pretty good bulls*** detectors. They tend not to fawn over PR driven celebrity as much and generally won't fall for the typical, "inspiring" tear-inducing fluff packages that seems to be at the core of every American sports piece. They laugh at millionaire actors emoting on cue at award shows and on talk show couches because it's really only happening because a camera is in proximity.

Not so when it comes to Farah: Even though I'm not British, I cringe every time he says "my country" because it sounds so put on, disingenuous and rehearsed. No other athlete, not Usain, Rudisha, Bekele, Kirani James or any American says it as much (if ever) because they don't have to convince anybody of their patriotism or sell it to anyone.

I've never been fond of the guy and have always prided myself for not falling for this very carefully crafted image, but cherry picking races to dodge Competion is the limit because it's harms the sport. A better system for a championship that really decides who is the best distance runner would be to have rules that are somewhat like the NCAAs where the top 30 runners in the world by time qualify for the olympic final 10k final regardless of nationality.

However sports are as much about entertainment as about fair competiton (hence covered up drug tests for big names etc) and this system would only be seen to further skew the championship towards the reality of East-African dominance in distance running. Many would find this "boring".

Take away the talent/poor time for the sport arguments. It's the questioning of his integrity that does not make sense.

He does not owe anybody anything. It's up to him and no-one else to decide when he wants to run. Correct translation of quote was "I am not fit enough to COMPETE, (not win), so I'm not running". The purpose of competition is to COMPETE. So why enter if you are not competing. either with the field or yourself. Not everyone in the race can expect to win, true, but they have some purpose to taking part.

On the Marathon. Running is his job, so signing a deal to run a marathon for megabucks is a sensible thing to do. He is one that dedicates himself to living in a training camp in kenya and running 140 mpw. Why on earth are people offended by this. Same goes for the "trial" marathon a year before. I'd take a 6 figure sum to pull out of a marathon at half way, wound't you?

Athletes in other sports do not make the sacrifices he does, and most are happy to let them rake in millions without calling them "sell outs" if they pull out of a game through lack of fitness or injury.

I'm not saying run through injury. Big difference not running because of an injury and not running because I don't believe 100% fit.

I don't think that's what Mo means. I believe you may have misinterpreted him, I think he means to say he doesn't want to compete when he is feeling only 80-90%. Not as a percentage of his chance to win, but of how his body feels at the time. By feeling 100%, he would be feeling ready to race, but by feeling 80-90%, he doesn't want to race because he is not feeling his best and feels he wouldn't be able to compete at his best. Easy mistake to interpret, but very different from what I believe he was saying.
