Exactly, it is cultural. In South America, we have the opposite problem - coffee-to-go is less common and coffee breaks take 45 minutes. We also take long lunch breaks and walk slowly. Productivity and wealth are lower, but people are friendlier and happier. Everything is a trade off.

I have to agree with your assessment of Starbuck coffee. I only go there in pinch when no other coffee is immediately available.
I did find one of their specialty coffees that was rather good. I do not remember what it is called but they have to make it upon your order. I think it is hand pressed or something. It tastes good but costs over 3 bucks but it is the only decent coffee I've ever had at Starbucks.

I'm American and I have always hated walking around with coffee. I've trained my girlfriend now that if we get coffee we have to sit down and drink the whole thing or else I'll get snarky

The fact that coffee is acidic is common knowledge, so your mistake was not that you thought coffee was basic (no one thinks that). This leads me to assume that you think acidic things have high PH.
We Americans would be infinitely better off if we adopted a more European lifestyle in lieu of the rat-like march toward death that we currently practice.
I work 12 hours/day - making good money and setting myself up to make much more down the line. I'd rather run 30 minutes each morning and take my coffee to go.
We Americans have to work, so we can afford a huge military that defends western Europe.

I was in the lobby of a biotech company last week, waiting for my host to collect me. While I was waiting, a party of 3 guys arrived and each of them had a damn Starbucks in one hand and a briefcase in the other. When they had to sign in, they were fumbling around trying to find places to put their coffees. A couple of minutes later, their host arrived in the lobby and I swear to God he had a fvcking coffee in one hand as well. The switching of coffee from one hand to another and the putting down of briefcases to permit a handshake was about the funniest pantomime I think I've seen.
So, my question is - WTF?

I was running a trail one time and came up upon these young ladies one with a starbucks coffee in hand. Seriously, of all places to be bringing a cup of coffee. It had to be miles from the nearest starbucks and a maybe a mile from any trash container. Plus the trail was narrow, rocky and had some drops off to a creek at the side. Anyway, I was running down a section of the trail that most people coming the opposite way just yield to until the other person passes because of all the rocks and stuff on trail requires a bit of concentration to get through. I was already in the middle of the section when this person with her coffee was starting to go up it. Seriously, she gave me this entitled look like she was expecting me to stop for her and let her pass. I dunno man, but someone with a mcdonalds coffee cup would never do that.
