She made THE World Championship final in the 1500 at age 17 years and 3 months. That was an extraordinary achievement in its own right. It's hard to say what she will do this year because of partaking in the activities of an 18 year old--AP tests, Senior Prom--but she still might go sub 4:02 this year. But next year, barring injuring, I think she can get sub 4. Jenny Simpson had better put the AR really low.

And she was clearly good for a HELL of a lot faster than her time tonight.
8:58 in this ridiculous, Keystone-Cops race suggests she could easily run 8:50 in a time-trial right now. (Maybe even 8:45.)
I think all the people happily announcing Mary's demise after a couple of disappointing races earlier this summer are gonna be pretty disappointed.
She's already back in great shape, and ready to continue marching forward towards true world-class status.
Don't be surprised to see her challenge that 4-minute mark later this season.

I thought the race was fascinating, not keystone coppy at all. what is wrong with surging and strategy? Why would we prefer 6 perfectly paced laps and then a kick?
Why not actually enjoy failed surges and the like?
That was a very entertaining, interesting race, with the outcome in doubt til the last 15 seconds. I'll take it everyday over a processional diamond league race.

It's not a matter of 'failed surges,' or 'strategy' (if any of this crap was purposeful 'strategy,' then it was incredibly dumb and poorly executed strategy), it's a matter of bunching up like a can of freaking sardines for no reason at all, stepping on each others' feet, kicking each other, stumbling, elbowing, hip-checking, etc.,,, all of which not only makes for slow times, but also negates running talent and puts a premium on luck, brawn, rule-breaking, and other things that have nothing to do with running talent.
I prefer running. That's why I watch running.
If you'd rather watch MMA, it's easy to find these days.
But the real point here, anyway, is that Mary C was brilliant, and her finish was exciting as hell.

DQ?!? Could you possibly be serious? There wasn't anything remotely approaching a DQ-able offense there. Take off those red, white and blue glasses before watching the race.

I agree, i've seen a lot worse, those Kenyans were like kittens compared to Diamond League racers. If Cain was boxed in like that w Diamond League pro's she would likely never have gotten out and ended up 3rd or worse, done a Uceny. She needs to work on her tactics and plan further ahead if she wants to compete with the pros, shouldering out of a box is relatively easy when running with children.
I was impressed with the Eritrean Kelati. She ran gutsy till the last lap, then faded to a 9:12PB, but what a porker! She makes a young Solinsky look anorexic. If she get's her bodyfat down to the other girls she will be flying!
Wow is right. She ran last 200 in about 29.7 (she came through 200 in 2nd just behind leader - clock was 8:28.58 and she finished in 8:58.48), despite being trapped for the first 25 meters of last 200. Can't wait to see her go for sub-4 1500 in Aug. Guessing she runs Stockholm to prep and then the sub-4 attempt is on in Zurich.
So nice to see her back to full fitness with that awesome closing speed.
Cain is a Winning Machine. Absolutely unflappable in big races.

well I'd say that there are many different kinds of running races and I think that was a good one.
As for MC - Her race was part of the fun - everyone knew she had a great last 200 but she was boxed in - would she get out? Would she have to back up and go around the pack? would the young africans know enough to stay on the rail or would they mess up and let cain through the inside? The africans were unknown - how was their kick? I was enthralled.
it wasn't MMA like you suggest.
plus the anomaly of non african person racing africans for a championship win. We don't see that very much. Although more and more I suppose.

Inside info: Nike or NOP (someone, but not AlSAl) through a proxy or some unofficial channel alerted KAA a month ago that they would not tolerate overage athletes competing against any of their Jr athletes. Apparently Nike or NOP can do something that IAAF and USATF can not. (This is only slightly better than a rumour.) With out a doubt, there are few overage African athlete competing at Wjrs, but nothing crazy like mid-20s. Btw, if those girls had been overaged, that race would have been in the 8:40s. Junior athletes slotted for global competitions train along side of elites in a pro group and are expected to be world class. The girls Cain beat were equal to H.S. national champions.
