Track nerds: Was Michael Carter's 81'3.5" shot put in 1979 truly the "greatest high school performance ever?"

Doesn't that assume lack of air resistance? Not 100% sure, but the 16 lb ball may be better at breaking the wind. Think about throwing a small pellet versus a cannonball - there has to be some difference, although much less extreme than this example.

that's why cubic root of masses is taken rather than square root

the air-resistance adds another power

look up "drag" in wiki

use logic :

if you ignored air-resistance, a 22.51 with 16lb woud be for 12lb ~

22.51 * (16/12)^(1/2) = 25.99

wrong conversion

apply the cubic root

it's imo the correct method for accurate estimate

Interesting. I've never heard of Barb before. Did she go onto a pro career? I guess that might've been before pros were allowed to compete in the Olympics, so probably not. I wonder how many feet she was beyond her nearest US HS competitor?

I find the history of field events fascinating, what with the designs/weights changing as the thrown objects get closer and closer to the edge of the stadium. Is the javelin thrown outside the track/stadium?
