But the risk of some 1-in-a-million or the next "Galen Rupp" suffering that fate is not worth excluding the 999,999 others from pursuing success as kids.

Most, even elite, kids are never going to make a living running and will have normal jobs like the rest of us in 10y.

Why not get while getting is good and while you have time?

A course which may well be mismeasured or net downhill. Run it on the track or a certified course or it is not legit.

This man Lucas Bourgoyne goes to my high school. He use to run for our cross country and track team, but once he started to lose more and more races and the competition got harder and harder, he decided to focus on more biking and triathlons since there is almost no competition for them at this age.

Knowing the family and Lucas well from track teams growing up, Lucas used running at the start of high school as cross training for cycling. He was already pursuing cycling long-term when he entered high school as he was already a National Champion in Cycling and Triathlon. He has ridden for Team USA overseas in multiple countries and stateside in Canada. There wasn’t enough time to pursue both when yearly intermediate development is critical for the long-term success at a Pro level. He is a USA Cycling Elite Category 1 cyclist (the level Pro teams select their roster from) and was the only 17 year old in the US at that level in the 2018 season. Had he focused on cross country and track and field, he would most definitely be running at or off the front. He never even ran that many miles before high school (ran quality mileage and workouts) and still produced a 15:36 5k on the track at 12 years old and won piles of National Championships and set numerous age group World Records. Results in high school had nothing to do with his decisions as it was not his focus, and cycling is the second most popular sport in Europe apparently. So, it is a highly competitive sport at the level he races at (fields that are almost all adults with Pros in the races). Sounds like someone from his high school is just jealous.
