That's absurd. NXN shows that in XC, the very best almost always come from wealthy areas. Maybe a poor Midwestern farmer type would be fast because of his economic surroundings, but we're talking about poor kids who are from broken homes and white-trash surroundings. No way.

Reasons why NXN would show rich kids performing better: Best individuals go to FL. It takes money to travel. Poor kids weren’t taught to work hard so they don’t want to become distance runners.

Almost always? Coatesville, 2006 boys' winners, is a burnt-out steel town. There are other winners, like Gig Harbor, that are middle-class at best. Manlius is possibly upper-middle. On the other hand, Naperville (from which Chris Derrick's Neuqua Valley team won, and Naperville North has had high finishes for boys and girls) and Arcadia (the only boys' team to win twice) are indeed a couple of the wealthiest areas in the US.

(All this is based on my skimming of Wikipedia demographic stats.)

The reason those runners broke 9:00 was because they were talented. Chapa, for example, went on to run 7:37 and 13:19. There were other runners at Hammond that never got close to 9:00. If anything, they were over-trained and were lucky to have avoided injuries or burn out.

Brentwood had three in the same year I believe with Scott Thompson Brody hasty and Taylor vroon

I can't believe nobody has mentioned yet in this thread that Northport NY, not only had 3 sub 9 (for full 2 miles) in the same year but that they did it in the same race, NBNO:

1 Brannigan, Mike East Northport, NY 8:53.59

2 Hunter, Andrew Purcellville, VA 8:53.81

3 McGowan, Tim Northport, NY 8:56.60

4 McGowan, Jack Northport, NY 8:57.57

Didn't Northport, NY have 3 in one season? Mickey Branigan was one of them.
