Ulrey hints time w Salazar wasnt too pleasant and glad to be gone

Ulrey ran 3:35 in college. What did the silver medalist, Galen Rupp, run in college? How can you say that Ulrey and Leonard were lesser talents?

To be fair, I don't think Ulrey ran that until after college and in summer a very loaded european race. Did he still have a year after that?

But to date that is his best mark ever I think.

Also, Rupp did blast him on the DMR mile in college, despite also running winning the 5000 and 3000 in the same meet. I think Rupp ran 13:18 in college and 27:31. He ran 3:39 while doubling at regionals so I think it's fair to say had been preparing for a 1500m race in europe that summer and done one, 3:35 was within reach even as a 5K-10K guy. Heck a west regionals he made 3:36 - 3:39 1500 specialists look like also rans.

Ulrey ran 3:35 in Rome after his junior year because he was top 3 at USAs and needed the qualifying time for the world championships.

Rupp ran 3:39 at PAC 10s getting 2nd to Centro, and look very surprised and excited by that accomplishment.

To the poster who said Rupp has more talent than Solinsky, that is false. Rupp's been doping since high school.

Nope. Rupp was 2nd to centro at Pac-10s and regionals, but it was regionals where he went 3:39. Pac-10s was super sit and kick and he still got all but centro, but Rupp was tripling there and he was excited because it was a 1-2-3 sweep for ducks. Wheating waited too long and was 3rd, but was also doubling in the 800.

Bye the way, Ulrey does look way puffier now than when he was in college or last year at NOP. What's going on with that? Most people at NOP get thinner.

No but the kids who felt they were cast aside by sponsors should understand that they apparently did nothing to increase business and deserve nothing in return as the door hits them on their way out. If they did something of value, they would have had a contract.

There are only so many prom queens and everyone wants to be the belle of the ball and yet they all want to tell the after party story when it is all over.

If Rupp has been "adjusting" his attitude since HS, then his biopassport would be rather worthless. What was there more than 10 years ago before testing started would be there today, at least as long "adjusting" has been continuous.

This isn't about Rupp, this is a thread about Ulrey who needs to realize that he was a great runner but has no real future at the international level and needs to think about getting a job in a few years.

No it's a thread about Ulrey apparently very happy to be out of the Salazar group which suggests some things about the inner workings of the NOP. But thank you for your fairly obvious blurb on sponsorship.

I'm sure that NOP has inner workings, but neither you or I know anything about those inner workings. Do you you have any connection to a sponsor?

No you're wrong, this was about NOP. Dorian can worry about his own career, he doesn't need a LetsRun thread worrying about it for him. He will be fine and will not look back and regret his time in athletics, however long he spends.

I am finding it hard to believe you have no connections to a sponsor seeing as every post of yours I've seen has been either 1) defending sh!t USATF decisions like the mens 5000m with 9 people in it, or 2) hating on former Nike-sponsored athletes including Symmonds and Goucher. But no I do not have any connections.

Here is what I think is funny about this whole thread. It appears very few of you actually listened to the interview and have now come up with all kinds of implications that are not found in Ulrey's comments. Here's what he said

1) Running in Portland felt like a chore/job and he wasn't having a lot of fun.

2) The training was too much. Everything was too much. He was training like a 10k guy. He learned he needed to take his easy days easy.

3) He's now training differently and eating healthier.

Whether or not his move pays off remains to be seen. I won't write him off after a 4:05 opener but it's also not validation that what he's doing is a positive change.

I don't see his comments as unusual for an athlete switching coaches or training group which isn't that uncommon.

I couldn't agree less. By dropping the hammer on Ulrey in the DMR mile, on a 2 day triple (5000, dmr mile, 3000) and then besting a load of 3:36-3:39 guys outdoors (including wheating) at pac-10s and regionals while doubling and tripling with 5000 and 10000 races he absolutely showed that he was capable of 3:35 minimum. He broke 1:50 in the 800 while training to be the the double 5000-10000 ncaa champ and make the world team that summer at 10K.

3:34 standing PR is as irrelevant and not indicative at all of what Rupp could run in a 1500 in europe. He ran 3:34 at oxy at the start of an outdoor season, that means he was just getting started and peaking 3-4 months later. Look, centro and wheating have run 3:31 and farah has run 3:29. Your nuts if you don't think he has a 3:31 in him at a minimum in a similar set up. Hell wheating ran his 3:31 years ago and was certainly a 3:29 candidate. These were rupps training mates and he was right with them.

It's funny when people say that one didn't prove that they could run a certain time because the time wasn't already on the books. That would be like Warren Buffet saying he is not going to buy a stock, because though all the indications are that it's undervalued and ready to rise substantially, because it's not at the top yet it hasn't proven to have that value.

When you know what to look for, it's easy to see what good runners are capable of. But hell, this board was saying in Rupp's senior year, after crushing everyone at every NCAA championship and running 13:18 indoors that he'd never touch 13:00 or 27:00, never have a chance to medal etc. Some people just can't see the indicators flashing red lights and have to wait until it's all over to know.
