I think your better chance (and it's slim at best) of beating him would be to keep the pace moderate to slow and then try to wait until he's boxed in or not paying attention and get a 3 - 4 second gap on him...hoping he won't catch you before the line.

There are too many factors in play to know how you should run the final against Lagat. These guys still have to go through the two heats. How taxing the heats are on the top guys will determine the tactics they use. If I had any one of the top 7 guys PB or current best I am going out to hang in and not force the pace until the end. Lagat may be a great kicker but many of these guys can kick. The key is knowing how to position yourself and when to kick based off how the race is going. I understand he is defending his 2012 title but why is he the guy to beat this weekend?
Also all the talk about Mo is quite amusing, unless you have some serious hardware from a Pro level race then do us all a favor and stop giving out racing advice. Also stop telling us what shape you think Mo was in based off his Olympic performance and his half marathon. Speculation is lame Mo has the hardware and no amount of speculation about the shape he was in will take those away.
Better question is of the 3 distance races which are you most excited to watch, Men or Women. I am pretty pumped for the mens 1500. It looks wide open and I am interested in seeing how Leer will run.

they only went to that ?swiss altitude camp in july to sharpen up speed with mo running 3'28 on 19th & an exhibition-type 3k before champs
all the hard running had been done in the winter & this was the sharpening up
the endurance was all there, this was typical sharpening up prior
mo coud not in any way have spent most of the year working on speed as if it hadn't been a typical type recent 10k championship race but a fast one, he wouda stood no chance

he had to have the endurance first in order to get in a position to use the speed
Mo was good enough to win even though he was probably lacking somewhat in endurance

Because winning golds in a sit and kick 27:30 10k race has little to do with being in sub 26:45 shape. Anyone with a brain realizes this. Asbel Kiprop could have won or at least gotten a medal in that race.
And also because Farah LOST that half marathon and was completely spent. And his kick was noinexistent. That clearly shows that 60:10 was close to his max that day. A 26:45 Farah would have been able to run his usual 52ish final 400m if he was really in that shape. But he didn't. His final 400m was around 59 or 60.
And he also dodged Bekele at Pre when Bekele asked for a fast pace. And everyone else in the group showed increased speed and decreased endurance.
This is so ridiculous that I think you're trolling. While I agree with you that Mo potentially dodged Bekele, there is no way he wasn't in 26:45 shape for those Olympics. You realize people are able to close in 52 because they have a lot left, right? This isn't some video game where the runner hits hyper drive. I'd say if you can close a 52 off an uneven 27:30 that you are potentially in 26:45 shape. Not including the fact that he has run that fast before. We're just so used to seeing people close in sub 53 that we've lost the appreciation for it. Do you think Bekele was in 27:10 shape when he was able to close in a 53? I would say that closing that fast has a lot to do with being in 26:45 shape.
As far as the half marathon is concerned, do you time every last 400 of the half marathons you watch? 59-60 second last 400s are very fast after 12.9 miles. The fact that he could close in sub 60 off a 60:10 effort also says he's worth a lot faster.
These people sharpen their speed year in and year out in hopes that their endurance training will get them to the front of the pack at the bell ready to go.
