These are incredibly slow runners fresh, so at the end of a long triathlon they're going to be glacial.
Even sprinting, he's probably not going much quicker than 8 minute mile pace.

This is most likely the correct answer. In simplest terms, looks like she was being a bit inconsiderate, and he responded by being a petty d*ckhead. End of story.
I only do 1-2 triathlons a year, but your personal space frequently invaded during these races, so it helps to relax a little and be prepared for it. To start, you are getting kicked in the face during the swim until you can get through all the people who can't swim. During transitions you find people trying to take little baths in front of your gear, blocking ingress and egress points, etc. The issue of people crossing your path or getting out of their lane (sometimes on bikes) when coming the opposite way is a danger on some courses. Whenever I see a woman, child, handicapped person or overweight athlete in a race my radar goes up.
Without the video you cannot make a ruling, but he appears to be focused and just getting another idiot out of the way.

Obviously I dont know what happened, so I can't make statements of fact here
But, my tendency is to "side" with the guy for two reasons
1. I find it more likely(I hope) that someone would accidentally step in front of an athlete than for an athlete to deliberately run a person over.
2. The dude who wrote the article didn't post the video. If it backed his version of stories to the extant he claims, I'd expect it to be posted. (Relatively) innocent until proven guilty, as far as I am concerned.
1. I need a high-quality version of the "punch" pic, it would make an awesome Fathead for my mancave.

Holy c&*p people, it does not take much to step around a person who wanders in your way. I have won plenty of races and never found it necessary to punch a little kid, tromple a granny or push an inattentive racer enjoying seeing their family on the sidelines.
Someone should've taught him some manners.
Haven't you guys run something like a marathon where the slow 1/2 marathoners are in your way for the last mile or two? There are tons of them all over the place and you just have to deal with it.
I really hope that the people defending this a$$hole are high schoolers. Otherwise it gives me one more reason to give up any hope for humanity.
If having someone run in your way was an excuse to knock them over, every collegiate 4X800 would turn into a giant boxing match. How is it that guys running 1:4X pace can navigate the exchange zone, but some plodder can't avoid a woman on a wide open road?
Yes, exactly. He has a ton of room to maneuver around her. His actions are unjustifiable. Even if she was doing cartwheels across the road punching her, or anyone, isn't justifiable. Looks like he's just a giant douchebag.

^ This. The guy is an a**hole, plain and simple. Sh*t happens, it wasn't the f*cking Olympics, and he had the entire road to maneuver around her. Punch or shove, it doesn't matter - he's a c*ck.

It's a lot easier to navigate through people who are all running in the same direction. It is harder to dodge someone running toward you, without looking at your direction.
Imagine driving at 75mph on a multi-lane highway, trying to pass the cars in front of you. Then imagine driving at 45mph and another car enters you lane from the opposite direction, backing up. Which one is harder to negotiate?
Having said that, this particular guy was running too close to the center line. He could have avoided a collision by using a little more caution.

ha ha...very true, and I agree this guy is an ass.
However, you are forgetting one thing: SHE is a triathlete too, so there's the dilemma: we hate her too. You forgot that part, didn't ya?
And on that note, let's all hold hands and say: yes, in this story, they were ALL douches (by definition of participating in the tri), the guy, the gal, the guy's husband, and all the deaf and blind people who they were helping who felt that by risking crashing and drowning during a TRIATHLON (3 events?? One after another?? OMG, OMG, OMG!!) they were inspiring us all to better lives.
(irony: somehow the blind and deaf athletes they were helping managed not to crash into anyone, but this woman [who I am sure "has it all", she proved that by doing the "tri", right? ] did manage to crash into the a-hole guy.

Exactly. If she's going the other way, then she's running backwards to get hit in the back. She probably backed into him in the last second. I'm sure they picked the pictures that make him look the best. Guy's at the end of his race and probably tired as crap. I'd be frustrated if someone wasn't paying attention and backed into me. Shrug.
Let me clear up the speculation. Like 99% of first time triathletes, she did what a lot of people do, stopped during the race to take a quick photo with the family. I've done many tris and road races and have seen it all but not this. She accidentally stepped back to take a photo and yes she did get in his way, but he had plenty of time to react. Instead of doing the sensible thing, which is first realizing that this s*** happens and then avoiding her, he made a fist and ran straight into her and yes, punched her back... There is video btw showing exactly that. This guy acted with compete rage. He had no one next to him; had the whole road to himself and was not exactly going for a course record here. Even if he had no time to move and accidentally ran into her (which absolutely did not happen), an reasonable reaction would have been to yell at her. He had time to react, wanted to "teach her a lesson" and clenched his fist and punched her in the back with full intent. If this is not the definition of a p**** I don't know what is.
We made sure a complaint was made to the race officials of course. His reaction: hate blogging. You would think that when the dust settled post race he would have apologized for overreacting with that punch. I'm sick of people raging and overreacting like this. Hang em higher! I also feel bad for her and she didn't want this to blow up, but there has to be consequences for idiots like this. Hang em higher!
