There are a few things to remember when evaluating Uconn's program.
1) the coaching staff has been hamstrung by strict roster and scholarship limitations. Until recently, 40 athletes on the squad and only 6.5 for the entire team.
2) The program goal has always been to compete for the Big East championship on the track and the top guys to be competitive nationally- both of which have happened
3) There has not been a true distance coach on staff since Coach Roy switched off to more of a director role (while still coaching events through 800m)
All of these factors combined mean that not everyone who enters the program will remain on the team. However, its mostly 49 second quarter milers, 1:58 half guys and mediocre distance runners who quit. Lets also remember that there has never (to my knowledge) been a Uconn kid who transferred and ran well somewhere else. Heck, they dont even transfer at all. These kids quit because they aren't good enough, don't want it bad enough or some other reason.
Additionally, because of the roster restrictions, lack of money, no true distance coach and stated goal of winning BE in track, distance running was not the focus. They've been phenomenal in middle distance (especially at 800m), but haven't done much at all at over 1500m, but that was largely due to the circumstances listed above.
Also, since Coach Roy switched his focus, two things have happened. 1) the program got more much more funding in terms of scholarships roster slots due to his behind the scenes work and 2) they've gotten much stronger as a team/individually.
As for the distance program- Renny Waldron was not a haphazard hire. Coach Roy and Coach Miller waited an entire year before hiring and did their homework and then some. They brought Renny on with the specific intent of bolstering their distance/XC program with the added benefit of strengthening the overall track and field program. Those that really know RW know that he is a great coach, an awesome and hard working recruiter (an area Coach Roy and Coach Miller would probably admit they've slipped in recent years) and a good dude whose athletes like and respect him.. I fully expect Uconn to be bringing a team to NCAA cross in about five years and the school records in the distance events to be rewritten.
Lastly, Uconn is not a frat school at all. I think I went to one frat party in my time in Storrs and it was lame. Lets not pretend that you can't be a good athlete at Uconn because of some supposed frat culture. It didn't seem to stop Kemba Walker or Maya Moore. :)
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to clear some things up. Go Huskies.
