Dumb Arizona female runner calls out Olympic runner for running with headphones

Yes to all three. I hit a few tennis balls with my mom yesterday so now I can call myself a tennis player. It's very important to my sense of identity and self-confidence that I be able to label myself as such because it implies that I've dedicated a significant amount of time, effort, and attention to a specific interest even though I haven't. It's awesome.

Not so sure about this. If I bang around on a piano am I a pianist? If I put a bandaid on a cut am I a doctor? If I throw some paint on a piece of paper am I an artist? If I can catch a football am I a football player?

If you suck at football but you play all the time, you're a football player. If your art sucks but that's your pastime, then you can call yourself an artist. Doctor is a legally protected term in the US, so you can't just call yourself that. If you can play some songs on the piano and that's something you regularly do, then you can call yourself a pianist.

If you run slowly but do it frequently, you can call yourself a runner. There's no element of skill involved in the definition of 'runner', nor in pianist, nor in artist.

Personally I often run with headphones, like many many many others do, never a problem. Want to cross the road? Got to look both ways regardless of headphones.

So I guess he's not only deaf, he's also blind. In your mind, as soon a a runner put on a set of earbuds/headphones, he's totally oblivious to anything and everything around him. And your statement that a driver that senses a runner or pedestrian stepping off the sidewalk onto the street into his path is going to swerve wildly and mow down people on the sidewalk is pretty ridiculous. When has that happened?

He is at the very least endangering himself. I personally know a man that is in a wheelchair for life because he was running with headphones, and a driver hit him from behind, and he never heard him coming. The driver was drunk, and not where he belonged, but to this day, Wally will tell you that he probably would have been able to react in time if he hadn't been wearing headphones.

It's not good survival instincts running with headphones.It cuts down on what you can hear, and the direction of sounds, even if you just wear one. Woman should never wear them if running alone. Especially on a trail.

Still, I live and let live. I wouldn't attempt to judge anyone because they use them. It's just a fact that headphones reduce awareness of surroundings.
