Wow, thats actually quite a bit better up top than any of the US state meets this year. The equivalent of 5 between 8:50 and 8:56 for 3200 with another at about 9:00.

Any more info on the race or the runners? Ages, are they going to American universities, etc.

'Freshman' kid looks like he's 17. Birth certificate anyone? And what's with the shades? Galen and Pre never wore shades.

Maybe it is just me but sub 9 for a freshman seems out of this world to me. I always thought if you broke 10 as a freshman you were pretty damned good.

Me too.

This kid has already run faster than Pre and Lindgren both ran before their senior years. Think about that.

Mileage is really over rated for fast twitch guys. I am guessing as an 8th grader he didn't run very many 3200s and was training drastically less. Through in a bunch of maturity and it happens. The question is what does he do next year and the year after. There are lots of freshman that have impressive times and then run basically the same time the rest of their careers.

It's hard for me to fathom a young kid going from 10:28 to 8:58 in one year running just 30-40 mpw as his coach seems to promote, unless he ran upwards of 100 mpw+ in the "off seasons." I don't care how much speed work he did. Still, an impressive feat. We will see what his improvement trajectory is in the coming years.

OH had only 1 which was the 18th sub 9 in Ohio history.

Maybe not that impressive but there are a number of states that have never had a sub 9 EVER.

Yes. Eli is a legit 15 year old. His 13 year old brother is almost as tall and only slightly slower at the same age. Eli ran a 9:24 two mile for time in practice last August and had shown steady progress in lowering his 2 mile time. It does help having two seniors that are of similar ability to push him every day.

There is a pretty normal 1 year age gap between people (i.e. you were 16 and 11 months while he will be 18 as senior) in HS. There tends to be a freshman or two every year that runs sub 9:10. Very few of them get a lot faster. Not to pick on anyone but Andrew Gardener ran a 9:01 as a freshman in 2010. What did he run in 2013? 8:54. Great time but it has to be a bit disappointing to improve 10secs in 3 years. The tough part is having the big improvement after you get to the 9 flat level to get you down sub 8:50. You also run in the situation where people start maxing out what their hs training can do. The need college (better groups, tougher competition) to make the jump to the next level.

Me too. His age puts him near the top for typical freshmen, many that age are sophomores.

I was a Jr but I skipped a grade.

This coach has an amazing resume with all these great milers and two milers. His approach is very intersting. He focuses on making them great milers...so great that by default they are decent to good xc guys or very good to great 2 milers depending on how good their miles are.

Kind of a bottom to top approach versus top to bottom style(mega base then periodization down to speedwork). A sort of opposite Lydiard approach of sorts. Interesting to note this too because he was a strong Lydinard propoponent when starting out.

I can see the merit in this. Someone close to me ran 4:2x in HS , 9:5x, then 16:3x in xc. Always knew his longer distances were out of whack with his speed at shorter distances. But he/we did closer to this style of training in the 80s than anything resembling Lydiard style(which i respect immensely btw). So, given his guys are SUCH good milers and 2 milers now...I would imagine his cross team will not be so mediocre in the near future eh?

Amazing how little is a set in stone thing in regards to training/coaching. Hope he writes a book soon. How's his results compare to someone like Joe Newton who has wrote books?

4:09 is not relatively better than the 8:58 he also ran. In fact, I would have guessed one from the other, to the second. Point being, on 30 miles a week as the article linked states, it's hard to believe the performance at 3200 would be equivalent to that at 1600 when it's a speed-based very low mileage approach. Something doesn't quite fit.

Incredible runs by Eli, congratulations!

I think a lot of what Stillwater does, as any good coach would do, is adapt to their training environment. Pretty much everything there is roads, hardly any trails if at all, and they've got some nice rolling hill kinda runs. Tougher to get in higher mileage without pounding yourself to death there so they go with quality miles.

As to Krahn and the others being able to run those strong 2 mile times with relatively low/moderate miles, one of their staple workouts they do is a "2 mile for time" out on the roads, you could only imagine how those go with a group as talented and relentless as this years was, and the kind of experience they get out there
