There's been evidence in the last few years of Salazar heading an underground EPO cartel in Brea, this is just another piece to the puzzle.

Also, rumors have it Tamagno was reported being seen wearing a Pollen Mask prior to his race, can anyone confirm?

You clearly have no idea who I am. Started my sophomore year and have only been running 3 years

Century League has an amazing history.

Did you know that in 1977, 2nd place at Century League Finals in the 880 was 1:52? First place was Jim Walters of Estancia in 1:51, who ran 1:48 a few weeks later. That 2nd place runner was Dave Kingsland of El Modena who ran 1:50 flat at the State Meet. 2 guys under 1:50 for 800 meters in the same league!

El Modena was also the first high school in the nation to have a non-senior run under 9:00 for 2 miles when Dave White (now the coach at Villa Park) ran 8:59.8 his junior year in 1969. And that's not even the school record! Steve Valen ran 8:55 for 3200m in 1981 for El Modena.

Foothill had Mark Spillsbury run 8:53 in 1976 and Matt Bell and Jeff Williams both run under 4:10 a few years later. And also some amazing female runners, many under 5:00 when it was pretty rare in the early 80's.

And Orange HS, which has been in the Century League at times, had Dale Story in 1959 who held the US High School record in the mile with a 4:11.0 just prior to Archie San Romani Jr. from Jim Ryun's high school breaking it (while Ryun was still in 6th grade). And of course Mary Decker set a WR in the indoor 880 while attending Orange HS in 1974.

thanks for the history lesson. I knew about Decker, and thought I knew about White. He's pretty soft-spoken about his achievements, and would rather tell you about his children's running experiences (both are doing well right now too).

It's rumored that Yorba Linda HS will join the Century League next year. Anyone have any updates on that?

also, I know that Tustin HS was in the league until recently. blasterqooq--do you know any track history about them?

Was going to say to look at who posted it. I've heard rumors about a possible YLHS join, surprisingly from my underclassmen teammates so i'm surprised I didn't hear about it first. They're quite a fast team as well. Don't know much about Tustin as I started running my soph year the year they left. They left in 2010 I believe.

Tustin's success historically has been on the girls' side. In the early 80's, they had 3 or 4 girls run under 11:00 for 3200m, including Shannon Stryker's 10:29. That's the same time frame when the Foothill girls team just up the street also had 3 or 4 girls under 11:00, so I'm guessing they were coming from the same source.

For boys, Tustin had their strongest program in the mid-60's. A great coach must have come and left because in 1965 alone, they had two boys run 4:18/4:19 for the full mile on a dirt track. Then in 1966, they had a boy run 1:53, and another boy at 4:20 in 1967.

Dave White must be the guy who ran a 2:17 marathon.

Sorry I meant to add that Tustin's fastest boy however also came during that early 80's heyday which blessed the girls team.. Mike Parker ran a 4:17 for the full mile in 1982.

Yes, Dave White did run 2:17. I believe he was with the leaders in the Olympic Trials and blew up somewhere along the way. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Congrats to Austin! Very impressive - 39 years ago I was fortunate to have run a 4:08.8 mile when I was 15 years old sophmore.

Austin's first 1600 a few weeks ago was 4:18. He followed that up with a 4:14.8 two weeks ago. Yesterday, competing in the Orange County Championships - he finished second in his amazing 4:11.1.

What has become of the Arcadia crew? de la Rosa, Rocha, etc.

Ok I apologize for diverting the subject again (4:11 is wicked fast for a freshman), but I need to settle this.

Freshmen- 15

Sophomores- 16

Juniors- 17

Seniors- 18

I think we can all agree that this is the "typical" age progression of American high school students. This means that December would be about the median. Certainly turning 15 years old in August or September of your Freshman year is on the older side and turning 15 in April or May is on the younger side for the grade. It doesn't matter to me how it reflects on the performance of this runner. But I figured if people were going to argue about it, they needed to have the proper information.

Corcoran - Villa Park, Jr - 4:10.95

Tamagno - Brea, Fr - 4:11.10

Goins - Canyon, Sr - 4:12.04

Gidabuday - El Modena, Jr - 4:12.43

Koryta - Brea, Jr - 4:13.22

Anybody know what the most competitive league in US history is? There must be something ridiculous from the 70's.

Tamagno has a nearly 40 year old record to set his sights on. J. [Jim] Arriola still holds the age 15 mile record of 4:08.8, as Jim noted a few posts before this one.

Tamagno recently turned 15, so he has some time to take a shot at it.

I went to high school with Jim and am amazed that record has stood for nearly 40 years.

In 2009 Dana Hills alone had four athletes at 4:12 or faster

Tyler Valdez 4:09.95

Blake Ahrold

Zack Phillips

Ryan Valdez

and I believe that was around the time that James Cameron ran 4:10 or faster as well, so I would give a slight edge to the South Coast League in 2009 for best ever mile depth.

This picture was taken at the South Coast league championship, and I believe one of the four Dana Hills boys did not run the mile that day.

South Coast league wins this one, but don't forget, only one of the top century league runners graduates this year.

Next year should be amazing for that league. You are right.
