Yah it seems unlikely she'd lock the door unless that was her habit. It's also possible she locked the door in response to OP yelling that there may be an intruder.
Some women are classy enough that they always want the bathroom door locked when they use the toilet.
And, be clear, this bathroom had a toilet with a private door, inside the bathroom.

I don't know, maybe trying to apply logic to a persons behavior under that kind of stress is not appropriate. If the stories about crime and violence in SA are true and rich/white people are often victims, then again, it makes it difficult for someone outside of that to judge how he reacted. His story sounds somewhat plausible.
Have any possible motives been discussed? She tweeted about Valentines day and bought him a gift, so that would indicate that she was happy with their relationship. Outside of her cheating on him or dumping him, what would potentially cause him to chase her into the bathroom and coldly gun her down through the door?
And if she was running from him because he was threatening her with a weapon, why the hell would she run to the bathroom and lock herself in instead of heading for the front door? Neighbors reported hearing disturbances earlier in the night, did they hear any screams before the shots fired?
Nothing about this makes sense either way.

He could have assumed that he called out to her in the dark, and that she was calling the police in the bed room, while he went to protect her/them with the guy...went into the bathroom having yelled for the intruder to get out, and found the privy door shut and assumed burglar was hiding in there...and in some screwed up state of fear, fired into the door 4 times...clearly he wanted what was in that privy taken out if not dead...
So either that all holds up as a horrible tragedy...
Or...once he had fired those shots...be woke up from his rage...and realized what he had done and tried to break in the privy and save her.
It's a horrible tragic situation anyway you look at it.
I just hope LRC won't pimp it for ratings forever until he is freed or sentenced. But it way down on the bottom of the front page after a while.

Neither was I. It's a news story, so obviously not everything is always going to be 100%, but how do they prosecutors know for sure he was on prosthetics when he shot the 4 bullets through the door? Please don't assume that everything I'm saying I believe to be 100% accurate, I'm not ignorant. The only way to find out what really happened is to remain open to every scenario and see which one best fits the evidence presented....
Even if what OP says is 100% true, he is still fully responsible for this young ladies death as he was wildly negligent for firing four bullets through a closed door before ascertaining who was behind it. No matter the real story... accident, 'roid rage, lover's quarrel turned violent, he should go to prison. To offer his fear and paranoia as an excuse for her death is a bit sickening, almost as if she was partially responsible because she got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She was an invited guest in his home, and (again, assuming what he says is true), she was doing nothing out of the ordinary. She didn't sneak into his house unannounced. According to OP, the toilet is in a smaller, separate room inside the bathroom. Why would an intruder climb in the window, then enter the smaller room where the toilet is and lock the door? And if he is as fearful of intruders as he claims to be and feels especially vulnerable because of his limited mobility, then I would think he would have those ladders brought inside prior to going to bed. I also thought it interesting that between OP getting up to get a fan and Reeva going to the bathroom, neither turned on a light, although he described the bedroom as "pitch black."
Also, those questioning why she locked the door. If he yelled "get out of my house" she would have no way of knowing at whom or where he was yelling. She hears this, locks the door and doesn't respond because shes scared shitless now too. She may have assumed he knew she was in the bathroom and came in the room to protect her.
If she was assaulted with the cricket bat, her injuries will show it and its all over for OP. But again, she would be screaming knowing her life was in danger and would not have run to hide in the bathroom. If he broke open the door with it, that could easily explain the blood as the room on the other side would be covered in it.

16.14 When I reached the bed, I realised that Reeva was not in bed. That is when it dawned on me that it could have been Reeva who was in the toilet. I returned to the bathroom calling her name. I tried to open the toilet door but it was locked.
In OP's version:
not good for OP, he believed when the intruder came out he would be in grave danger, but fired before that
called out to Reeva AFTER firing, she never had a chance
things NOT in this affidavit:
- denial of any fight verbal or otherwise earlier in evening
- statement about alcohol or drug use earlier in evening
- denial or explanation of noise complaint at 1:30a.m. by neighbors
one thing I find very odd is that he "found" the "key" to the bathroom on the floor, perhaps this is something commons in South Africa, but I have never heard of a key lock for a private master bath in a master bedroom
I have only an opinion and no onmiprescient idea of what the truth is here, but it is interesting to note that you could read OP's affidavit almost as a contrived response as follows:

It won't be a jury trial.
Highly unlikely it will be televised.
Not a ton of witnesses.
Probably a short trial.
And one judge makes the verdict.

I am trying to stay open minded and not let my previous thoughts about OP cloud my thinking on this.
But, any respect I had for OP as an athlete overcoming adversity went away when he criticized the other Paralympic Competitor for his prosthetics. That was absolutely "Lance Armstrong-esque Narcissism" in trying to protect his own interest above anyone else.
In this case, the unanswered questions I have include:
How drunk was he? I had read somewhere there was evidence of drinking that night. Was he basically passed-out and unable to get a clear picture of the situation.
But if you are so paranoid that at the first noise, you would get your gun and proceed to shoot blindly in a closed room, why would you ever leave any window unlocked? You would be the OCD person who - throughout the house - checks every lock 2-3 times, before going to bed. He recalls construction ladders in this time of terror. Why didn't he recall them before he went to bed and lock the bathroom window?

the forensic analysis will be able to determine whether the blood got on the bat from pounding her head or from just pooling on it on the floor. again, the bat will be his downfall.
He's guilty of something, regardless. You don't get to fire 4 shots into a bathroom that you have no idea who is in and walk away. He's going to prison for some length of time even if it is an accident. And if what he says is true, he should have just put the gun in his mouth, because if that was my wife that I just accidentally killed, I wouldn't be able to live with that guilt.
right, the bat is the key - his story is plausible, unless he beat her with the cricket bat at some point.
I could envision some scenario where he got mad, hit her with the bat, she ran to the bathroom, locked the door, he shot her through the door...
but if she has no bat wounds his story seems to hang together , from what we know.

I think the FIRST thing you do is quietly wake your girlfriend and tell her to call the Police, NOT yell to intruder. And if you do yell a few feet from her to call the Police, you might take notice of the fact that she didn't respond. So-- again, seems like total BS.]

it's also possible she hit him with the bat and his blood is embedded in it. they clearly had a fight earlier in the night (cops don't show up to minor arguments over who forgot to take the garbage out) and we know he is a violent nut. i think this is much more plausible than him hitting her with it because he doesn't appear to have any bat marks. plus, i would assume he would beat the crap out of her with his hands and wouldn't need a bat to do so.
