Regardless, I don't think the odds are in favor of any one coach having one of their athletes making it to the Olympics, regardless of how good a coach they are. Their aren't many Jim Ryuns around. Tinman
i just want to say that newton was a great coach because he always sucked me off whenever i desired. he never played favorites, no matter what ability you had. except this one time he waxed don sage's eyebrows and that made everyone jealous. i would give my life for that man. i would even stand naked in a locker room shower while my entire P.E. class laughs at me and newton demeans me.
if anyone doesnt know the story... ask a yorkie on this board. im sure they can tell you about the shower story.
Yo, Jim, how's it going? You still in the area, teaching yet? And running? :-) Noah is going to show up today (8/2)in Davenport, spend a day, and then look for a place to live in Iowa City- he can hang with Adam Roche, LOL.
I am not a HEHS alumni. Grew up in suburban Detroit, kids are York alumni. But got to know Mr. Rieff from all the meets we were at. He was a class guy.
AS for Newton's runners, only Marius Bakken made the Olympics. Sage has the potential. Jim White and Ron Craker were good collegiate runners back in the day. He has had a bunch of All-AMercians, for what it is worth, and in the past few years this includes Sage, Jim Costello (throws), Kyle Erickson (hurdles) and I don't know who else. Main thing is, he has plenty of people still running, many coaching, and is still hanging tough- we'll see if he hangs until he dies, though- he always said 25 titles and out.

What shower story?
Dude is screwing around. He is referring to a bit of nastiness wherein some kid claimed Newton did exactly that, made him stand in the shower while he got yelled at. Led to a suit against Newton that I believe was finally thrown out, or they settled OOC to make it go away, I am not sure, since it happened after my kids were gone. Kid was supposedly a screw-up of some sort and had caused other problems in the past with other teachers.
As for waxing Sage's eyebrows, that one I never saw. I am not sure it is possible to do anything about Don's eyebrows. It is easier to clear a forest.
Ok the truth is here. I am friends with both the accusser and have ties to Newton in many ways. Anyway the famous shower story is one thing that went way to far. It goes down that The accusser was in gym class and they were swimming for the day. After the clss Newton caught the kid ripping up some of the school issued swim suits in the locker room. This made Nemwton upset and told him he couldnt use any of the swim suits because he might tear more up. So everyone in the shower used one except him. This recieved many chuckles since he was know as a jokester people thought it was funny and the next class came in and saw what was going on as well and started laughing at him. Even though the kid had a sense of humor he also had many emotional problems as well and thought what newton did was wrong and embarassed him. This lead to a legal battle that many of you have heard about. What they were trying to get from Newton was an apology and Newton would not do that. The amount they were suing for was believed to be $1.
The funny thing is though the kids favorite thing to do now is run. he seems to enjoy running marathons and road races whenever he can. For the most part that is how it goes and i think that it wasnt that bad and sometimes people over react.
As a young coach, it was important to hear "They don't care what you know until they know that you care." I know he had an binder full of quotes, but that's one that applies to every coach and one that I try to remember. Thank you Mr. Newton.
