Ever lived in a college town? collegians run 5-6 abreast on the roads. I love it. The people, not so much. But it is good advertising.

This is kind of like critical mass rides (i.e. big events where cyclists go around getting in everyone's way). A few people who are already into the sport think of it as "good advertising." Everyone else just thinks it's obnoxious.
Though I'm not sure what this particular variety of obnoxiousness has to do with college towns. I have lived most of my life in college towns (Ithaca and State College) and I haven't noticed this.

I love driving by the boys doing their morning run on my way to work. The only people in town that have a problem with it shouldn't live in a community that supports college athletics.

ok. let me address a side issue that could be a basis of this guy's complaint. (1st off, let me say that i ran 100 mile weeks for 6 years or more back in my prime, so i ran most of the time on the roads of major cities). that being said, even I get upset with some jackass runner, (usually the serious hobby type who runs a 39 minute 10k and thinks the olympics are the next stop). there he goes at dusk stomping right down the 4 lane road in the street, sharing a lane with a car, making cars move very carefully around him, to avoid hitting him...WHEN THE SIDEWALK IS AVAILABLE FOR THAT STRETCH, making it a much safer option for that stretch for everyone involved. When there is a sidewalk available, out of common sense and saftey concerns for myself, i would take the sidewalk rather than run at the far side of a lane that i am sharing with a car. I didn't want to die.

Also if you were running 80-110 a week you would know that the asphalt feels WAY better than the sidewalk.

There is some validity to that but the tilt in most streets is worse than the harshness of the sidewalks (which are often bordered by grass/dirt (hint).

This is especially true if the sidewalks in question are not only made of concrete but are also cracked and rutted. I find that many sidewalks are unsuitable for running for that reason.
I can't recall seeing this addressed here, but let's suppose for a minute that the OP's club does exactly what this guy wants them to and tells all of its members not to run on "his" streets or roads. Exactly how big a dent will this make in this guy's "problem"? How many of those offending runners are likely to be in that club?

sounds like you dont run enough then. i run 111 miles a week and it doesnt matter to me.

Why don't they make the sidewalk out of asphalt?
Came from the North of England where the pavements are aminly tarmac (asphalt). Down South for some reason they are concrete slabs. Why the council oputs them down I have no idea as people are always putting in claims for tripping over them. They are the worst surface to run on but I always try and run on the edge of a park even at night or a grass verge by the road

...Well, with cycling, most car accidents happen with cyclists riding on sidewalks (although, I've never looked into how the statistic is calculated, so maybe it wasn't standardized properly).
If you're running on a sidewalk, you'll have to slow down to look at every crosswalk b/c cars don't stop at the stop sign line.

I'll preface this by saying I have very few training weeks in the 80+ range over my now 33 years of consistent running. I had many years with 50-60 mpw, but these days I'm pretty consistently at about only half of that. If anyone thinks that makes my response invalid so be it.
To think that running on asphalt vs running on concrete is going to make a major difference in how your legs or feet feel doesn't seem plausible to me. Mentally maybe, but I find it hard to believe that the difference in hardness of these surfaces makes much of a measurable physical difference. If we were talking about running on sand vs concrete, maybe. Even then, I can't help but believing that one's running form plays a much bigger role in the forces transmitted from whatever surface you're running on than the material the surface is comprised of.
Concrete is hard. Asphalt is hard. Crushed rock is hard. Hard packed dirt is hard. In all these cases your running shoes are far softer than any surface. And no matter what, running with good form means your legs absorb less harsh shock then running with lousy form.
Are there any studies out there about how much actual force is transmitted to a runner's legs on one surface vs another? If there was any kind of data showing a meaningful difference that would likely change my position.
Take a hammer and strike concrete - it may chip, or possibly crack if hit hard enough. Use the same hammer on asphalt with the same force - you are much more likely to just make a slight indentation unless the ashphalt is warm/hot - them you will leave a distinct mark. Use the same hammer on a dirt trail and without much effort you can dent the surface. There is a difference!
