I really don't think it is a manner of condoning the use of anything so much as simply recognizing that this is something that people like to do so our role as the government is NOT to tell people what they can and cannot do but rather to regulate and tax as appropriate.
By the way, most economists would argue that taxing harmful behaviors (ala taxing the shit out of tobacco) is exactly what we should do not just in this case but in general.
I say condoning, because we have to be careful that we aren't legalizing it simply to make money. I think that is not the role of government.
However, I would also agree that taxing the hell out of it would be a great thing, in order to discourage use. But (and correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't know the ins and outs of the new law in Washington) the purpose of decriminalization this time around was not to "tax the s***" out of it. I would be happy to vote for it if that were the case. More than anything, Tuesday's election was the triumph of potheads to do whatever they feel like in the name of freedom. And I disagree with that stance, as I've outlined before. Freedom should not mean freedom from responsibility.
