IMHO. Call it a consultant or a coach, he merely needs some peer review and some science to confirm the training theories he uses, but not to take over his training. Ryan Hall already pushes himself a lot which is what a coach primarily does.
I saw him at Shady Rest Park one morning before a run and it looked like he was for the most part training alone and just talking to some guy as he rubbed his legs with some roller. I'm sure there at the Mammoth Club he had worked something out where Ryan was mostly already self-coached and trained alone a lot already. Moving from there must have meant little real change.
He doesn't need to return to Mammoth.... as a self-coached athlete, he may need some perspective and someone to say he to do it another way but to blow up his training especially as he matures and gains more and more experience.

Alberto has proven himself 10 times over for the 5k-10k. He is arguably the best in the world. However, that has nothing to do with the marathon. He has failed at the marathon several times over and the only real success in the marathon (Kara Goucher)left him for a reason. Stop acting like he is a savior to all that is running. Under the Alberto plan Galen is going to dissappoint many of you when moving to the marathon.

Ed Eyestone would be a good fit - has had personal success with marathon and has been successful at BYU - would be interesting how the Mormon/Christian thing would work out

Ryan is a confidence runner.
If he is pressured in training he loses confidence. He needs to train with a group like Hansons where he is able to get solid training with guys that are not a threat to him. This will allow him to gain confidence and get a solid base.
I disagree, thats exactly what he needs to develop his weaknesses. If he wants win a a major marathon he needs to learn how to run with others who are just as goods as he is.
He will not time trial his way to a win a major marathon! Theres just too much talent as good as him to let that happen.
However, he does have the talent to race with the best in the world. What better way to develop as a champion then to train with champions.
Therefore, Canovas workout structure would be a great fit for what Hall NEEDS.
He would though need change his mentality, where he might not be able to keep pace on some workouts or finish workouts with some of Canovas runners. However, if he had patience and focused on letting the running come to him I believe it could be the best thing for him.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
We want to see Hall win a major marathon. Finishing 3rd to 6th is great but not a win. Canova could develop the tools in him to win!

YOU DO NOT CHANGE A PERSONS MENTALITY. The key is to play to Ryan's strengths. You can not correct his weaknesses as they are a part of his psyche. His problems have been someone trying to change things.
