Is anyone else losing respect for Leo Manzano running around with the Mexican flag??

According to Leo he was representing BOTH the US and Mexico (his words via Twitter) so I guess he didn't choose at all did he?

Leo made a beautiful heartfelt gesture when he held both the US and Mexico flag. I fully support Leo in this.

Actually, no. "Everyone" is not losing respect for Leo. If you think about it, he will probably inspire more young, potential Mexican runners--both U.S. citizens, and those living in Mexico--than he will Americans. It's a very smart move on his part. If you can be a hero in two countries, why not?

I, for one, couldn't possibly have gained more respect for Manzano after his performance today, and could care less if he had picked up a flag from every single country in the world during his celebration, sewn them in to one big diaper, and paraded around London for three days and nights on a raging bender.

Yes, I would defend Lagat. He chose to become a citizen. That means something to me. How many of the rest of us CHOSE to be an American?

You weren't BORN in Italy. Leo was born in Mexico, and lives in Texas, which shares a border with Mexico, and has a substantial number of people with recent Mexican heritage. So your analogy does not work. But if you did choose to carry two flags, I'd support you, even though it would make you a huge hypocrite.

Yep. I agree. He wears the American uniform...everything he has is due to this country. Otherwise run for Mexico. It's great to be proud of your heritage but it's disrespectful to wave the Mexican flag while representing America. Too bad Centrowitz didn't beat him.

I don't have a problem with Leo. Americans tend to treat Mexican-Americans with disrespect, like the law in Arizona which allows them to ask anyone who looks hispanic for proof of citizenship.

Arizona, Texas, California, Utah, Nevada, parts of Oklahama and Colorado were all part of Mexico until the 1860s. Many of the people who lived there have descendants who are as American as anyone else but are hispanic looking. As poorly treated as Mexicans are, it's little wonder that they want to show pride in their heritage.
