Did Shalane Flanagan screw Notosha Rogers?

interesting thread, enjoyed reading points on both sides, didn't realized all this happen during the race, and I watch it twice.

My position is, Shalane should not of gotten in front of a major race and slow it down at the expense of other runners who were trying to qualify for the Olympics, a race which she stated before hand she hand no interests.

I understand her wanting to help Lisa, but......

Her actions was nothing more then a physical barrier which compromise the integrity of the race at the expense of of potental Olyampians. I like Lisa and Amy and glad they will repersenting the USA, but several runners like Rogers, Tara, and Deb were but in a position they should not have had to deal because of Shalanes present in the race.

The sad part is the pace was only 12 second of the qualifying make which put into question her tactics.

Gald the thread was started, it brings up some interesting possiblities.

PS... Rogers, Tara, and epecially Rogers made this race for me, they where all exciting to watch!!!

I race. I always double knot the strings. They are not coming undone.

I'm friends with some Olympic runners. One of them thought that Lisa was so ridiculous. Something like how can you not make sure your shoes do not come untied while you are a professional runner.

I talked to my friend about Shalane slowing it down and we both think that it is not right to slow it down for someone not intelligent enough to tie her shoe properly. But it's still a tactic so go to the front if you have to. Handle it how you have to handle it properly.

Look, Lisa Uhl may have been able to run with her shoe untied or with no shoe, but that would have put her in unnecessary danger. She could probably still qualify as the fittest of the potential "A" runners. Shalane helped her qualify without injury so we have a healthy Olympic team.

The runners who supposedly could have made the standard were under no requirement to run behind Flanagan.

At the very least, Flanagan comes off as a hypocrite after the patriotic pre-race interview where she said she does not serve in the military but chooses to run in the national championship, and then intentionally slowed down the race and impaired her competitors' opportunities to run a fast time, not to mention created a dangerous situation which caused one to fall.

Although it is very unlikey what she did has any official consequences, it does not look ethical, and she violated the spirit of competition and of the sport.

Agree. Shalane didn't screw anyone. She qualified and had the right to run anyway she pleased. This sounds like the cry baby fest over Uhl screwing Denna by not pacing her to a 10,000 qualifier.

If the other runners in the race did not want the pace slowed down they should have simply gone around Flanagan. They chose not to.

Where did you come from? Clearly it was a response in defense for the two women Kybaws insulted in his/her post. No one flopped around on the ground, she was tripped and still ended up second. More accomplished there then that person will ever in their lifetime. The increased pace was to get the race going again since the "professionals" running clearly had a sorry hidden agenda. Yeah, because they're only 21-22 y.o. with little racing experience at this level. Deena would have done it. She wouldn't cower to Shalane slowing down the pace, knowing she needed to hit the A to make the team. The college girls have many more years to learn how to race the big dogs.

Nike TCs are like the Goldman Sachs of US track. Its all about them at any cost. Since when is this a team sport in trials. I really don't like Shalene after this now.

This is such BS. You are not friends with "some Olympians." Very few people are and they certainly wouldn't be talking smack like that. Olympians understand the sport. The Olympic trials are also the National Championship and include national ranking bonuses so it makes perfect sense to run them even if an athlete doesn't plan on on going on. A runner with a contract would understand that. You don't have to go on to even collect the prize money, you just have to be eligible to.

Yes, I am. I ran competitively in college and met many athletes through the years. Friends with Olympians from the USA, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Romania, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Italy, Norway and more. I compete today as a masters athlete. You're the BS and can't intimidate me.

The Olympic friend I talked to about this Olympic Trials ran for a country other than the USA.

It's not hard to knot the strings.
