Not entirely true...Under Mahon he ran the half marathon US record (was the 20k record also under him?), and under himself he tried to break 4 in the mile only a year ago? I thikn he also took to the track for a 10k at stanford under Mahon.

At some point, if his PF doesn't make a miraculous recovery, he needs to do the right thing and give up his spot. While I can understand that competing in the Olympics is the pinnacle for any elite runner, it's pretty selfish to go there and just jog through it with an injury that prevents you from doing your best.
And here's another question. If Ritz makes the team in the 10k and gets his A standard, and then finds out Hall dropped from the marathon and that spot goes to him, what does he do? Run the marathon, stick with the 10k, do both?
I agree Hall is embarrassing this country by running these times. He needs to give up his spot now and train for the Boise Turkey Trot 8k. Maybe he will actually win a race for a change.

Fair enough. I was just trying to help out someone who posted above who was accused of making shit up, which wasn't exactly the case. Good job posting on letsrun though. Based on everything he said in both interviews he seem to be close to where he wants to be but not quite there. I guess only Ryan and his coach God know for sure. But I hope everything works out for him seeing as how he will almost certainly be representing the US in the Olympics.
After a failed track season under Mahon he started moving up in distance and won the US 20k championship and ran that great half marathon. From then on they got away from real quality track speed training. He ran an OK 28 minute 10k one year and ran the US road mile a year or so ago when he blew up and ran about 4:15. Other than that I don't recall any real hard race type efforts from him other than marathons.

Yeah, spot on. And I think he ran that road mile pretty shortly after a marathon too. Can't imagine he prepped much or took it very seriously, especially considering his DFL time. Can't count that as a real effort to work on speed.

First, MP isn't even "tempoing" - it's 10-15 seconds slower than tempo pace for a ~2:05 marathoner.
Second, you should be able to run MP for 13 miles at ANY point in your marathon training. Kenyans do efforts at MP for 20-30k routinely. Look at the Canova threads.

No US runner had the sack to do the double, and definitely not man-of-glass Ritz.
Salazar (unlike Canova, Mutai, Kiprop, Kipsang, Kirui...) also subscribes to the idea that training for the marathon has to be massively different than training for the 10k. He will consider Ritz inadequately prepared for an August marathon (and he probably is).
Finally, Ritz runs under the world's best recruiter and most underperforming marathon coach, so really he wouldn't make an impact in the Oly marathon.

This was the first thought that came to my mind. However, what is hard to understand is how he can run 2:04 (aided) to 2:06 (legit) for the marathon and only run 30-min 10k's or 64/65 min halves. Nothing about these times add up, particularly as he ran 59 min for the half YEARS ago.
Also, if his hamstring is seriously bothering him and has been for a while, you can definitely consider this the beginning of the end for him. I know many of you youngsters don't believe it or understand it, but that damn hamstring injury is the absolute worst. All other "injuries" are just nagging compared to the hammy strain.

Wow, do you really not see that you're totally contradicting yourself?
First, you say that running a half marathon at marathon pace should be an easy tempo workout.
Then you say (using a definition that I agree with) that tempo pace is "fastest you could do for one hour in race conditions."
That means, by your definition, that if you run a half-marathon at "tempo pace", IT'S AN ALL-OUT RACE! Hall clearly said he was using this half as a workout, which means he'd be expecting to run it slower that your definition of tempo pace. Otherwise it wouldn't be a workout -- it would just be a race.
Ritz has plenty of time to prepare for an Aug marathon- maybe double 10K, marathon in Londo- 7 days apart. Hell, maybe NIKE can buy Hall's spot for him.
