New Beer Mile WR!!!!!!

Hey over exceited ones. You really don't have a new world record!

I have run under 5 minutes in the beer mile 2 times.

I ran at the University of Oregon, and was a pretty marginal Cross Country/steeple chase guy (9:06), but I know what i did in the BEER MILE, because it was the only race I ever won at Hayward field.

For years the Track team always puts on a end of year track meet after nationls that gets pretty wound up. It's called the Stan Hudman naked invitational (Shitum for short) and promots debauchery. The Beer Mile is the main event, and in '94 I ran 4:56 with 12oz beer cans. Our process was to have the beers open on the ground before every lap. Other contestants that day included 10k British Olympian Karl Keska...U of O team mate Tracy Holister, myself, and a bunch of others. We had about 100 people in the stands watching and raising money for the winner. I took the lead with 600 to go and that was it. We were splitting 63-64, and I was drinking the beers in around 3-5 seconds. I never throw up!

In '95 the Shitum organizers requested at least 3 people watch me at all times, because how could a marginal distance runner so easy defeat the great ones. Well; I was even more prepared my senior year because Coach Dellinger decided he didn't need me at PAC-10's, so I got stupid drunk for 3 weeks. I was very well trained for the '95 Beer Mile. We raised the stakes to 16oz beers in plastic cups (yes I said cups). 3 witnesses that watched that year were Chris Nelson, Scott Nicholas, and Matt Davis; I have images of the day. It was easier out of cups, and we did it the same way: Cups on the ground, pick it up and don't spill a drop. ran 4:56 again.

OK, let the games begin. You can post a reply to my comments, but in the end you didn't run a new world record, but you ran well for an Aussie's.

There's no way you were completely finishing a 12 oz. beer (without shotgunning/altering the can in some fashion and/or using one of those giant widemouth cans that were in vogue for a while) in 3 seconds; I'd say 5 seconds would be a big stretch as well unless you were leaving behind a good deal of the beer in foam state or otherwise. Fluid mechanics at work...that's why you can chug a beer much quicker out of a cup than a bottle or can.

Ultimately, what's the point of doing a beer mile if you aren't even remotely close to finishing all of your beers? You don't get credit for running a mile if you only run 3 laps, so why get credit for completing a beer mile in a certain time if you aren't really drinking a full 48 oz?

You had better not actually be Tim Dodson.

If you are, go read the rules. Neither of your runs would be record eligible either.

Don't be silly. They made the "rules" a decade after we ran the event. Also; like I said there were over a hundred people there and always had 3 around me to ensure we drank it all without pouring all over.

I had to drink my entire beers. That included probably close to a gallon of gut-wrenching foam.

I've also heard (unconfirmed) the foam has a lot of alcohol. If we're allowed to skip the foam, hell, I'll do the bicentennial in 60 hours

Hate to bring this up again. There is no proof that the whole beer was drank. Most beer miles I have done and been to the competitors turn the can or bottle upside down over their heads to proof it has been done. If this was done and nothing came out then I would believe this race was a WR. This world record is as legitimate as the chinese womens world records from the early 90's

My get on this is that it appears that there was some beer left in the bottles of the competitors. One way of ensuring that all of the 48 oz is drunk is to have an official assigned to each runner and when the runner "finishes" his beer, he hands it over to the official and while running the 400m, the official pours the remaining in a cup. The runner runs the next lap, drinks the beer and hands off the bottle again to the official. The official pours whatever is remaining into the cup. I would have the cup as a 4oz cup. If at any time the official pours any remaining beer into from the bottle into the cup and it goes over 4oz total from the 4 bottles of beer, the runner is DQd. After the 4th lap, the clock is still ticking when the runner drinks the cup and not one drop remains. Then stop the watch. i used to partake in a 5-miler that we drank a beer at the start(no drops remaininig)then stopped at every mile and drank a beer(no drops remaining). When you finished, you shotgunned a 12oz canned beer(no drops remaining), then you completed the race. You should know by now that you never waste one drop of beer...what's wrong with you guys?

Not that impressive at all. Anyone that can run under 75min for the half could quite easily beat this. All you need to do is spew after each couple of beers. Beer mile record is much more impressive

Gotta give credit to him for a very good run -- looked very smooth, and good control on the breathing at the transition.

However, if you throw claims of a record around you better have read the rules. Even if bottles were acceptable, the CAN must be turned upside down over the head to prove it is empty, and a lack thereof is a rookie mistake.

To clarify, 355mL bottles are acceptable. The point was regarding the turning of the can over the head.

What were they drinking, Carlton Cold?
