Subaru - great car or pretentious douchemobile?

I would looooove to see what all the Subaru haters drive in real life.

Dude, you got it all wrong. Prius are douchebag cars. The normal, eco friendly cars are BMW and Lexus. Only pretentious pricks drive subaru or prius.

Only eco friendly car is no car at all. Anyone who thinks they are driving an eco friendly car (and says it with no irony) is a pretentious douche.

First time I've heard a Subaru called pretentious.

Quirky, tough, reliable,... but pretentious? I had a 1990s Subaru. Great car. Had to get rid of it at ~200,000 miles when the number of kids exceeded the seats. Was given a Subaru Forester for my rental on a trip last month and liked it a whole lot.

You're not going to impress a lot of people with a Subaru. It's just a car some people like and some don't. Not a lot of status or image to it.

I hate to add to this 6yr old thread bump, but the original intent of the OP was the mindest of Subaru owners. In general your well-educated, outdoorsy, "practical" subaru owner thinks they've got the secret wonder car and are pretty pretentious about it.

I'm on my third Outback, love the car, and yes: it kills in the snow, but I'm probably a little pretentious about a plasticy, ugly, underpowered, wierd wagon.

Can the Passat Alltrak come to the US or can the 535d wagon get a suspesion lift so I can justify my wagon pretension?

I drive a lot, about 70k miles a year between a few vehicles, and Subaru drivers are the absolute worst and the most aggressive.

Oh and I'm not talking about WRX or STI drivers. They are car guys and generally have great road manners/etiquette.

The worst offenders are Impreza, forester and legacy.

Outback drivers are also very civilized on the road.

Well I have found the worst drivers are those in late model Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Since I have about as much evidence to support my assertion than yours, it is no less correct.

Unless you live in a rugged place that requires 4 wheel drive, they're mostly a car for lefties (they market cars as being from 'zero landfill' plants... also, this post reminded me of a podcast

My first was bought from my parents in 1985, a 1600 hatchback, to use at college, and they got it because it was inexpensive and had a reputation of being a good value. It was a solid little reliable vehicle that got me through 1990. Then when the Forester came out, I got the first year's model, again, inexpensive, good reviews, room to carry extra stuff. If Subaru had some kind of stigma attached to it at the time, I wasn't aware of it, and I'm definitely not an eco-nut, granola eating type. Maybe a bit of a goofball.
