Well, I guess you can't count to one, can you?

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and guess that this probably didn't come across as well as he might have intended. But I agree with him that one advantage of not running on a scholarship is that you do not have the same obligations and pressures that a scholarship athlete has, or should have. I'm guessing many Ivy athletes put academics as their first priority, knowing that their athletic performances may suffer, but not feeling the pressure of having to live up to their full ride, or possibly even lose it. But I am also sure that most of these same athletes acknowledge the assistance the coach has provided them in the admissions process, a big deal, and feel a sense of obligation from that, if from nothing else.

I am guessing that this young man will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of his future teammates and of his future coach - there are some excellent athletes both currently on the Harvard team and coming on board next year. It will be exciting to watch them all.

Anyways, HepsTrack put up an interesting article about the potential of an intense women's 5k later this year. I think it can also apply to XC.

But essentially, you have the following women running against each other this year:

- Alex Banfich (Princeton), defending XC champion and XC All-American

- Abbey D'Agostino (Dartmouth), outdoor 5k All-American

- Kelsey Karys (Cornell), outdoor 10k Heps champion, ran at XC Nationals

- Leslie Kovach (Penn), scored in outdoor 10k, 5k, and 3k in 2011

- Caitie Meyers (Dartmouth), scored in outdoor 10k in 2011

- Heidi Caldwell (Brown), scored in outdoor 10k and 5k in 2011

- Katie Kellner (Cornell), outdoor 10k All-Ivy

- Waverly Neer (Columbia), high school national indoor 5k record holder (16:35), outdoor 3k USATF Junior champion

- Kathryn and Erika Fluehr (Princeton), high school indoor All-Americans in 5k (16:43 and 16:45 respectively)

Forgot about McDonough but I did remember Karys... dang, this XC season got a lot more interesting.

Yeah, but Adam Cotton is going there to study, the reason people normally go to university. If he's available for track, and obviously it's in his interest, then he'll run. Same situation that pertained at his school, ie basically he's getting an education. I'm sure Harvard haven't agreed to some arrangement they don't like any more than he has.

Cornell has posted its men's track and field recruits' info:

A curious post, with a sprinkling of lightly-performed guys among some *powerhouse* recruits in the hurdles/jumps (natch)/throws (a big improvement)/multis/mid-distances.

These are most of the distance/xc guys (and Cornell commentaries) listed--they're not likely to make an immediate impact, I'd say (but then, few frosh do):

Sam Belcher – Deerfield Academy, Mass.

NEPSTA champion in cross country and track with a best of 8:47 for 3,000 meters and 15:15 for 5,000 meters.

Tyler Eustance – Hilton, N.Y.

A solid distance runner with a best of 9:27.45 for two miles.

Kieran Kinnare – Ipswich, Mass.

State placer in the two mile at 9:21.96. He ranked 10th in the U.S. in the [2000m] steeplechase at 6:09 and was an All-American.

David Melly – Newton South, Mass.

Was a state placer in the two mile at 9:20.11. He will also do the steeplechase.

Ben Potts – Haddonfield Memorial H.S., N.J.

Has great range from 1:53 in 800 to 9:18 in the two-mile. State group champion.

I find it interesting how 3 of the Cornell recruits are college transfers (one from the now defunct Delaware program). You normally don't hear of too many transfers INTO the Ivy League (at least I don't) so I'm curious of their transitions will be.

That's because many (most?) of the Ivy League schools either 1) don't accept transfers at all, or 2) accept transfers so rarely/only for exceptional academics that it's a moot point. Apparently Cornell is not in either of those categories.

How old is he? I know he's an incoming frosh but is he older than the typical frosh due to him coming from Europe?

Found it. His birthday is January 1992, so he's currently 19. Will he break 4 before the end of his frosh year?
