Rupp's Race Proved NOTHING

It proved he can beat Merga in a major meet. So, it did prove something.

Can we please stop throwing the word "dominated" like it doesn't mean anything. Rupp did NOT "dominate" Merga, Solinsky did NOT "dominate" Rupp at USAs. The word dominate should be reserved for races where you actually beat the other guy by at least a second, come on. The result was still impressive though.

I agree Solinsky's medal prospects are essentially nil. Obviously you think this, Solinsky ran no race the day before and could not beat lagat, and barely beat a tired Rupp. Rupp ran the day before and the last 1200m of his 10k was at a faster pace than Lagat's 1500m (by several seconds).

anyone who closes in 54 in a 13:06 race not far behind a 26:46 guy and ahead of the World XC champion and Diamond League 5000m guy from last year is very good and should run well under 13. anyone who doesn't realize this has his head up his arse.

...maybe he beat Merga as Merga does most of the pace work...the others just sit & kick!

Besides, Merga has been racing a lot of high quality races...how many has Rupp run? Just wondering???

In fact, Merga is so tired, as noted in the race video, that he stops upon crossing the finish line right away.

Again, let's see what happens when everyone is well rested and at their collective peak-then we'll see who's the best-for now!

Solinsky beat Rupp by 1.87 seconds at USAs.

Is 1.87 > 1.00?

Oops, entire last lap was 51.94, from when Bekele hit the bell to wheh Lagat finished.

Lagat one lap to go 12:07.7

Lagat at end of 5k 12:59.23

So, Lagat closed in 51.5 - 51.6.

Rupp has now run 5 seconds faster at 5000 than his coach did 29 years ago. Rupp has gone from 13:37 in 2004 to 13:06 today. This is a nice steady improvement. Rupp is likely in close to 13 flat shape. Rupp is much closer to his ceiling than the fanboys suspect. They never suspected it with Alan Webb in 2007 either. Rupp will likely never run much better than he is running in 2011. This is the way it is, and the morons will accuse me of being a hater.

Galen ran 13:37 his senior year of high school and 5 years after ran faster than that for both halves of the 10,000m at Stanford.

If he is close to his ceiling, it is only because he will run very, very fast when in a properly paced race. He most certainly would have broken 13 minutes last summer in the race where he was knocked down and this year he is in far superior shape.

I still struggle to grasp why you feel the need to post things as "this is the way it is" when you don't know what you're talking about.

Rupp didn't really get toasted, but the arrogant Oregon fanboys sure did.

Rupp can medal with the best if he has a good day. Lets not forget he got 3rd at the NYC Half Marathon in a very stacked field with the likes of Mo Farah, Geb Geb, Peter Kamais, Alistar Cragg, Tesfaye Girma, and of course Hall and Meb. That was a very stacked race and he got on the podium so it is possible for him, he just needs a super good day.

What you need to note is that the young man was at the front of the dang-blasted race at the bell in the World %$#&ing Champs.

I don't see too many folks on here (you among them) able to say that they've been in the same position.

Give him time. 2-4 years ago, no-one woulda bet money on Mo winning a gold and a silver.
