That's one US junior in 1966, who came close to 1.44.08. No other American juniors have come within 1 second of Ryun since. 1966 is actually during my lifetime (so that gives you an indication of how much lifetime I have left), so I will play the odds and stick with my prediction that 1.44.08 will not be broken by a North American during my lifetime.
NCAA Division I rules, when I was running, were you have to be 25 or under. However, there were exemptions if you were in the military or on a religious mission. I assume its the same now.
On another note, I have a friend coaching in Kenya who told me that his athletes lie about their age to him and officials in the hope of making junior/youth teams. You would too if you had the chance to change the lives of your entire extended family.

That was my first post, and that is the truth from a friend who is coaching in Kenya. He has guys show up to his training claiming to be younger than they really are for the sole purpose of qualifying for youth and junior competition. Your guy ran a great race, but I doubt he is 16 years-old. Actually, he ran so well his age is irrelevant. The guy front ran a 1.44.08. There are probably only 2 or 3 guys in the world currently able to do that.
During my stay in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last year, I asked a young runner (who, according to him, was about 17 years old) what his birthday was. He responded, "My parents, they say I was born on a Wednesday."
He has a receding hairline.

Now to business, I have come in to contact with all types of black people, whether they be african or african-american, at my all-black high school or even track meets.
There is a discernible feature of all 16 year-olds and that is a fleshy face. This guy's face is so pronounced, he's probably 27. His eyes have crow's feet and there are obvious hollow marks on his face which are never apparent on a 16 year old. Look at Bekele at 18 in the 5000 racing El G (it's on youtube), then look at this guy.
I make no claims as to this guy's age. I am only pointing out that he bears more of a liking to more 30 year old african than he does to a 16-year old one.

The winner of that race is not 16 anymore than Alan Webb is 16 or Bernard Lagat is 24. He is an obvious CHEATER! And saying that doesn't make me racist, it means i don't close my eyes and hum when i see the facts.
you all realize that you should add at least 5 years of age to every african who competes right? they don't have proper birth certification over there. this is not in the slightest impressive since i guarantee that all those "kids" are at least 21 or 22.

I seem to remember at the time he was 26! Interestingly his D.O.B is debatable, with some sources claiming it to be 12.12.72 and just as many having it as 12.12.1970.

And Coe was 22 when he set his first WR in 79.
I also seem to remember a thread on here a few years ago where someone pointed out that Rudisha (or it might have been Kiprop) had his age on his Facebook profile as 2 years older than the age the IAAF had for him.

Incredible 800m run from the 16 year old Kenyan yesterday 1:44.08 and a dominating performance by Ajee Wilson 2:02.64 today. Two great performances from the teenagers!
There was a Kenyan (I have forgotten his name) a while back who lied his age a few years younger to run for UTEP back during their powerhouse days. A few decades later when he really turned 40, he wanted to claim his real birth date to run as a masters runner. He found himself having to keep the fake date of birth and waiting a few more years to be able to run as a masters runner.
Good post. It shows how rough different parts of the world can be, and I'm sure that will definitely make you age faster. All the stress of avoiding dying...but then again, if its a way of life, it might not be as stressful for a Kenyan than an american...

Well this IS a big issue and one the IAAF should really want to sort out. Sadly they are not FBI-like age investigators so where do you start?
If you are the IAAF you NEED European, American and Australasian talent to stick at the sport and become the national heroes that crowds in Europe want to go watch race. Is it any wonder track and field is at an all time low in terms of crowd numbers, meetings that disappear annually and sponsorship money? Do you really think Europeans give a sh*t about watching fields stacked with east Africans win every middle and long distance race at EVERY freaking meet? Look at the flipside - would you expect a track and field meet in Nairobi to garner much interest if there were no Kenyans running in it? Yet Europe is the financial heart of the sport and yet there seems to be a complete lack of regard for simple economics when it comes to that fact.
If I am a legit 16 year old 800m runner who has run 1.49-1.50 (which would be OUTSTANDING) and I turn up to a World Youth Championships excited and full of expectation, get bundled out in the heats and then later watch a bunch of guys who look like my older brother run sub 1.45 in the final (only 5 Olympic 800m golds have ever been won in faster than 1.44.08) then do you really think I am going to go away from those championships motivated to make a career in the sport?
You have to be kidding me. It's a massive problem. It's not as simple as saying "oh they eventually get to the seniors" or "its wonderful running anyway" the point of the World Youth Championships is to create a pathway and taste for careers in professional athletics. All letting cheating Africans in the meet does is completely turn off the athletes you desperately need to develop for the future prospects of your sport.
