Can he wear the "O"rgasm jersey or does he have to go generic.

He will be representing our country as a scholar-athlete while going for the "A" standard. The experience in Europe is necessary to that end. His maturity in balancing academics and athletics should be supported, while his youth is kept in proper perspective.
I remember a high school kid from Coos Bay who made the USA team and ran in Europe before his UO freshman year. One concern should be protecting him from the track shark promoters.

You know non-Americans can accept funding from their federations without jeopardizing their NCAA eligibility? Let's say USATF were in a position to kick Centrowitz a plane ticket to Europe so he could try for a standard. Is that bad compared to Centrowitz Sr putting the ticket on his Amex?
In Centrowitz's case, I'm sure he'll be accepted to a major race in Europe, and they'll offer the standard travel reimbursement. They'd give him half a room (meaning he shares with another athlete). He won't get per diem. I can't think of a single European meet I've ever been to that gave cash. All of them provide three meals a day.
I'm his sugar daddy and I pay for him! You got a problem with that? I didn't think so.
Meet Directors don't help defray travel costs or offer appearance fees to the US 1500 champion?
If not, I think Centro got $4000 for winning the 1500 on Saturday, which can be used for competition expenses, including some very nice travel accommodations.
Oregon pays all "necessary expenses", if participation in the meet is motivated by education, and by the physical, mental, and social benefits derived.
Who paid for the flight, lodging, and food of Andrew Wheating and Galen Rupp at the 08' Olympics?
They were still NCAA athletes.
Same situation. And you know what? They still won NCAA events following years

Is there an entry fee to get in a Diamond League event? No. It is by invitation only. Preferential treatment, due to an athletes reputation(U.S. Champion) is a prohibited form of payment. NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2
The fact remains, Nate Brannen set the Canadian indoor mile record at the Boston Indoor Games while running for Michigan (in uniform), Rupp ran the 3000m at the adidas meet in LA during his redshit year, Rupp also ran at Boston Indoor while a Duck, Lagat ran in Europe before his last season at WSU. There are many examples of athletes running in invitationals, having their travel paid by the meet organization and maintaining their NCAA eligibility.
I'm not a Real Doctor, I have a Master's Degree. Idiots abound and trolls on their heels.
Hell, I've had my school pay for trips post-season and I think I was barely breaking 15:30 at the time.
Who Pays has already been called out for the whiny little bitch he is. This would be a good time to end the thread.
Everyone is missing a point. Centro is running for himself this summer, not Oregon and not the NCAA. He is in between seasons and can do what he wants as long as he doesn't break the amateur rules. Jesse won gold in the Olympics as a student at Ohio State, was that wrong? I think we all agree there will be a lot of pressure and stress. This will not be a cruise. Once he gets the standard, I presume he will quickly return, rest , and then build for the Worlds. P.S. The Florida 400 runner as well as others are in the same boat...don't see anyone complaining about them.

Back in the day, we wore the OREGON unless we were representing the USA officially...or our Track Club, or had made a USA team and had a uni around.
...This is how I met Authur Lydiard, from his experiences with Bowerman and Oregon etc., he stepped up and said "hi" and that it was nice to see the Oregon singlet in Europe.
It'll be interesting to see what Centro does. His father wore NYAC alot.

We'll have to keep Marquise Goodwin off the WC team as well.
This is nothing new!! Go back to 1991, Bob Kennedy made the WC team in the 5k as a Junior in college, he ran a couple races in Europe including 13:22 for the 5000 in Oslo leading up to the World Championships. In 1992, he made the Olympic Team and ran in Europe leading up to the games, he still had eligibility left after the games and won NCAA XC that fall.
This was a well written blog article by Lauren Fleshman about how these meets run. http://asklaurenfleshman.com/journal/2010/07/21/middle-class-american-in-monaco/

Why on earth do you care?

This has to be one of the most idiotic posts in the history of LR...no, on second thought there have been many just as stupid as this one. Dick Brown once told me about these European trips. Usually a few athletes and a coach or two make arrangements at a "youth hostel like" dump and scrounge up inadequate meals wherever they can find them. Get it yet, these are working trips for guys like Centro. These are not vacations. Usually parents find a way to scrounge up enough credit card advances to cover their kid.
