I'm on an F visa married to a kimchi dragon for 6 years. We reside in Gangnam where the privates are g$$$$$$d. I rarely meet runners here. I never meet competitive runners.

Anyway, I'm never going to post in this thread again but after 8 years in daehangook:

- adjummas and adjoshis are still rude

- the wolfhound is still fun occasionally

- chamchi kimbab is still the best lunch snack

- I've never passed out in a shiny suit on a park bench off the soju

the movie didn't SEEK to provide a balanced cultural exploration of bangkok. it sought to highlight the pockets of insanity you definitely CAN get into in that place.

you're also ignoring the positive aspects of BKK that it did show--the quick, cheap medical care (when Phil gets shot), the ease of transportation (riding tuk tuks and trucks), the nice hotel tower (where they meet Paul Giamatti's businessman/cop character), the law enforcement agencies that work undercover to bust international criminals like Chow, the local residents willing to help blown-out looking miscreants find their friend if they can, the list goes on.

Not true at all. The positives of Bangkok shown were brief and distorted. Tuk Tuks are ripoffs. Only clueless tourists ride them.

If you didn't already know that I live in Bangkok you must be living under a rock. It's pretty well known here.

why would they show anything nice about bangkok when the writers are trying to show how dirty/wild the main characters got the night before? a 5 star hotel/the parks you mentioned would have been completely out of place

having been to a few indescribable bachelor parties in BKK, (as well as a many tame uneventful holidays) I can say bangkok's reputation is completely deserved. that does not mean there is a regular life there like any other city - you can live an extremely staid life there.

But BKK is different, you must admit Jason. There is no other place on earth where you can trade up and down so easily (Rio?) - its all for sale, with no judgement or rules. Manila & Jakarta, while excellent places to go berserk, have the strong element of religion - but nothing like that in Thailand.

This side of Thailand represents to a greater degree what you find in most of Asia - "What if The Mob ran most businesses?". Organised crime meeting market demand for a variety of services (gambling, prostitution and drugs).

Wow are you off. Have you even BEEN/LIVED in Bangkok? You know alot of people who have not been to the US say that all is clean, free (speech etc...), and easy to make money as in millions! Have you been to the US? I'm not sure what part of Bangkok you claim to live in but there is PLENTY of dirty and corrupt places around the area I live in.

As for the Thai father...that's like saying all Americans are cowboys and ride horses. Not true! Yes there are some respectful familyships and practices but there are also plenty of wife-beaters and druggies just like back in the US.

Hotels? Yes there are plenty of nice ones...like in Beverly hills, but once you get to south central it's like the south side of Bangkok. Plenty of dirt and sleeze!

ON THE WHOLE Thai people are a more healthy culture than US residents...however, there are plenty of trashy people/parts.

I still don't understand why anyone would want to live their life in Thailand as a runner. Congestion, traffic, not many other runners, too hot, too rainy.
