I'd put my house that he doesn't break 3:30 this year. I would put a large amount of money that he doesn't break 3:31 and I would put $100 that he doesn't break 3:32. Next year I would not be willing to take these bets but the first year out of college is a different thing and he is getting used to changing his whole training.

Wheating has a 1500m PR of 3:30.9 and no matter what happens in his career, you can't take that away from him.

and for the sake of buying my mate a drink... i'd rather see that dude a couple of posts above lose his house.
If Wheating lowers his PR by a few 10th and runs consistently in the 3:31/32 range in 2011, that would be great, but it sounds like there are a lot of people who will be dissapointed with that. The above is the most likely scenerio and would suite me fine and probably Wheating himself as well.
No doubt Wheating is talented, but there is a reason why only a hand full of athletes have run 3:29...becasue it is very difficult. The fact that he was able to run so fast out the gate doesn't mean lighting is going to continue to strike. There is a pletohra of Kenyans who ran 3:32 in there first pro season and never ran much faster. I firmly believe in 2010 Wheating was perhaps a legit 3:32/33 guy who had one incredible race. There is nothing he had done before or after that suggest he was a legit 3:30 athlete.
I watched the incredible expectations placed on Webb after his (one) magical race. Some people actually thought that if he ran a 3:53 mile one year then he should run 3:51 the next year. Webb ended up spending several years getting back to 3:53.
webb ended up at 3:46, so clearly the expectations were warranted, but obviously it took time and he changed coaches twice in the interim. wheating's retaining his college coach and there is no reason whatsoever to think that his race was magic. what we know about him is that in college he ran to win and trailed nearly the entire field in most of his races until the last 100 to 200m. he continued to run like that at pre and in europe, but there the fields were faster. when he ran 3:51 at pre, he said that he could have run faster had he gone earlier. so, with wheating, the limiting factor to this point has been mental. when he decides that he can handle a 2:47 or 2:48 1200m, we'll see the sub 3:29/3:45. until he fatigues at the end of a race from having gone out to his limit, rather than running out of room at the end while still kicking faster than nearly anyone, we won't be able to identify his potential. in that race, he just does not look like he's going for it as he sits at the way back of the pack. gregson's obviously another good candidate for a sub 3:30. hard to believe how consistently he's improved and he was just a step behind wheating.
