Sixty-eight years old and I'm finally getting around to reading "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
Now I know what all the fuss is about. It's great. Funny, moving and profound (really).
It's too bad that they can't adapt it to the screen. I'm sure there are some, probably a lot, who would mistake an anti racist story as racist.
The last book I read was "Old Goriot" by Balzac. I didn't think that anyone could be darker than Dostoyevsky. I was wrong

How did you get interested in that book? Through Joyce, or some other way?
Through Joyce. I can't remember if it was Joyce's critical writings or Ellmann's biography of Joyce. I had purchased the novel 35 years ago.
The One Year Bible. The Old Testament is completely new to me! The New Testament is more in line with previous knowledge. Also reading a book called Legend.

Great impressive thread. I have been reviewing the entire thread and getting some great book ideas.
However there is a great disconnect for me. I consider the quality of posts that I have read on this message board and it doesn't match the higher level of literary practices reported on this thread.
Conclusion: Reading intelligent complex books causes one to make simplistic and often racist posts.

Just finished reading "Catcher in the Rye" for the first time. I can why it's such a classic.
Right now I am diving into Mark Twain's short stories. Highly entertaining. I just finished a story with some disgruntled skeletons moving from a neglected cemetery in search of a nicer one.

I just read Run For Your Life on my new Kindle. Amazing. It's YA, but maybe we're finally having some books written about runners by a runner.
The part about the New York City Marathon is really good.

Inferno (Dan Brown) - about 7/8 through but set it aside for now, kind of disappointing.
The Bourne Legacy (Eric Van Lustbader/Robert Ludlum) - not at all like last year's movie. About half way through, not bad.

Born to Run. So far, it is garbage and reeks of the recent bare running fad. I got the book for Christmas. Maybe it should go up on ebay or I can give it to a triathlete since they still believe in this running shoes cause injuries garbage.

Have you ever been to that part of the country? I had always meant to read it, but never did until business took me to Wisconsin. Beautiful country.
